LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior Suzanne Raffaele scored four goals, and junior Laura Nuss added two goals and one assist, as the Bucknell women's lacrosse team defeated Holy Cross, 10-6, on Saturday, March 29. With the victory, the Bison make it two-straight conference wins to improve to 2-2 in league play.
The Orange and Blue opened up a 2-0 lead early in the game after two quick goals from Raffaele. The captain tallied just 1:11 into the game, before taking a pass from Nuss at the 25:00 mark. The Crusaders responded a minute later when Katie Britt scored on an Erin Rowse pass to make it 2-1.
Holy Cross knotted the game with 13:30 to play until halftime on Melissa Conley's first goal of the season, but Raffaele gave Bucknell a 3-2 edge with her third goal of the day with 1:47 to go until the intermission.
The Bison jumped out to a 5-2 lead early in the second half, scoring the first two goals of the period. Nuss took advantage of a free position shot just 1:26 into the frame, before junior Amy Hasler got in the scoring column with a goal at the 22:21 mark. The Crusaders came charging back, however, with two unanswered scores to get back within one. Less than a minute after Hasler's goal, Jana Tencati scored the first of her two goals on a free position shot. The sophomore converted again 1:23 later to make it a 5-4 contest.
After Nuss gave Bucknell a 6-4 lead, Holy Cross' Justine Reeber and Britt scored back-to-back goals less than a minute apart to tie the game again, 6-6, with 14:55 to play.
The Orange and Blue defense went to work over the remainder of the game, holding the Crusaders scoreless while tallying the final four goals of the contest. Sophomore Andrea Paraud broke the tie with her score at the 12:23 mark, and it remained a one-goal game until junior Meredith Wright converted a free position shot with just under four minutes left.
Hasler added an insurance goal with 1:29 to play, before Raffaele scored on a breakaway with just one second left for the 10-6 win.
Senior Nicole Kallis played a solid game in goal, getting in front of nine of Holy Cross' 21 shots. Kellaigh Malangone made 10 saves in net for the Crusaders.
