March 26, 2003
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Senior Suzanne Raffaele had a hand in four of Bucknell's seven first half goals, as the Bison women's lacrosse team built a 7-0 halftime lead and never looked back on their way to an 11-3 win at Lehigh on Wednesday, March 26. The Orange and Blue pick up their first Patriot League victory of the season, while winning their seventh-straight over the Mountain Hawks.
Bucknell scored the first nine goals of the game, including four in the first 5:40 of the contest. Junior Amy Hasler started the barrage just 1:53 into the game, taking a pass from Raffaele for the 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes later, sophomore Andrea Paraud fed junior Elizabeth Schuster for a 2-0 cushion. Over the next 1:26, Raffaele found Hasler again for a score, before tallying her own to give Bucknell a 4-0 advantage.
After nearly a 12 minute spell with no offense, Raffaele netted her second of the game with 12:49 to play in the first half. Almost 10 minutes later, Paraud scored on a free position shot, giving BU a 6-0 lead, and 29 seconds later, Hasler finished the scoring for the half with an unassisted goal for a 7-0 score at the break.
Both teams were quiet offensively through the first eight minutes of the second half, before junior Meredith Wright tallied off a feed from classmate Laura Nuss with 8:09 gone in the final 30. Just over three minutes later, Nuss found Paraud for a 9-0 Bucknell lead.
The Mountain Hawks finally snuck one past Bison goalkeeper Nicole Kallis, getting on the board with an Ella Studdiford goal with 14:44 to play. Lehigh scored three of the final five goals of the half, but it was too little, too late, as the early deficit was too much to overcome.
Paraud and sophomore Amy Lee scored Bucknell's final two goals of the contest.
Kallis made 12 saves in 58:09 for the Bison, while allowing a season-low three goals. Freshman Mary-Elizabeth McDaniel saw time for the first time for BU, playing the final 1:51 of the game without giving up a goal. Lehigh's keeper, Kyle Begina, stopped six Bucknell shots.
Schuster and Paraud each recorded three draw controls as the Bison controlled the draw 11 times to Lehigh's three. BU also held a slight edge in shots, 24-23, over the Mountain Hawks.
Bucknell improves to 2-4 on the year and 1-2 in Patriot League play. The Orange and Blue host Holy Cross at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 29. The game will be broadcast live on WMLP-1380AM, with the pregame show beginning at 11:45 a.m. Lehigh falls to 4-2 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
