LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's water polo team got goals from 12 different players as the squad rolled to a 14-4 win over Siena in BU's final game of the Bucknell Invitational. The Bison, hosting the three-day event, went undefeated on the weekend with wins over Michigan State, Gannon and Slippery Rock.
The Orange and Blue wasted little time establishing themselves when freshman Jennifer Meitzner scored the first two goals of the game just 37 seconds apart for the early 2-0 lead. Sophomore Ashley Aiken made it 3-0 at the end of the first quarter with an unassisted score with 2:37 to play.
Freshman Laura Meitzner extended the Bucknell lead with a fast break goal just 33 seconds into the second quarter. Goals from junior Daniela Faas and sophomore Meg Blitzer with more than three minutes left until halftime gave the Bison a 6-0 cushion, and neither team would score the rest of the half.
Siena finally got on the board 51 seconds into the third quarter with a rifled shot from the left side. Over the next minute, Bucknell and the Saints exchanged goals, capped by junior Kelly Hofstetter's score with 5:07 remaining in the period to give BU an 8-2 lead. Sophomore Cody Keffer scored with 4:34 to go, before a scoring drought set in for both sides.
Freshman Amanda Nogic broke the drought with her third goal of the season with just 51 seconds left in the quarter. Siena answered just seven seconds later, before Hofstetter trickled her second of the day across the goal line with 25 ticks left until the final quarter.
The Bison added to their 11-3 lead in the fourth, outscoring the Saints 3-1 in the frame. Freshmen Amy Wollish, Vanessa Scaringi and Ellen Caccia each scored their first collegiate goals in the quarter.
Bucknell improves to 8-8 on the season. The Orange and Blue are in action next weekend at Villanova for the second set of Southern Division League Games. Play starts with a 12:00 p.m. game against George Washington on Saturday, March 29.
