Bucknell Women's Tennis Opens Home Schedule with 7-0 Win Over Loyola

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Five of Bucknell's six singles players went three sets, but all came out victorious as the Bison women's tennis team earned a 7-0 victory over visiting Loyola College on Wednesday, March 19. The Orange and Blue claimed two of three doubles matches for the doubles point.
Bucknell's number one and number two doubles teams secured the point for BU. It took sophomore Nadezda Curcic and freshman Veronica Brown some extra time, but the duo finally came out on top of a 9-8 (2) decision at the first flight. Sophomore Tanya Sichko and freshman Rheanna Gaskin guaranteed the doubles victory for the Bison with a convincing 8-0 win at number two.
In singles play, Curcic dropped her first set 6-4 to Carolyn Pilkington, before rebounding for 6-3, 6-1 wins in the next two at number one. At the second flight, Brown was also a 6-4 first-set loser, but responded with two 6-2 victories to get a win over Kaitlin Russo. Senior Jill Wurzburg was the only Bucknell player to win her singles match in straight sets, defeating Gina Turturiello 6-3, 6-1 at the third flight.
Sichko won 6-2 in the first set, before Colleen Ruane evened the match with a 7-5 win in the second. Sichko came back to defeat Ruane 6-1 in the third for the win at number four. Gaskin also used three sets to beat Amy Nitch at the fifth flight, dropping a 6-3 first set, and winning 6-2, 6-1 in the last two.
Junior Samantha Berthod rounded out the Bucknell scoring with a 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 win against Jessica Leberatore at number six.
The Bison extend their spring record to 7-0. The Orange and Blue travel to Pittsburgh for two weekend games. Bucknell faces Pittsburgh at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 22, before taking on Duquesne at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 23.
