OSCEOLA, FLA. - On Sunday, Bucknell softball began spring training in Osceola, Fla., at the Rebel Spring Games. The Bison fell to Butler, 9-1, and Penn, 11-3, on the first day of play. Senior Meredith Gill and junior Angie Stackhouse each snatched a double, while Stackhouse had team high three runs batted in.
The Bison started out with a 1-0 lead over Butler. Kristen Potts was able to score the lonely point with the help of Lauren Wible in the first inning. Butler came back in the second inning to record one run, and a second run in the third inning. The Bison suffered in the fourth inning allowing four runs to score. Butler's Cameo Wrasse hit a triple to send three runners home in the fourth. Lauren Box was the starting pitcher for the Herd and was replaced by Kellie Haskins after 3.1 innings. The Bulldogs were able to capture three more runs in the next 2.2 innings.
Bucknell allowed 12 hits, and Gill, Potts, Wible and Jenny Ross earned a base hit each.
Against Penn, the Bison got off to a rocky start allowing three runs in the first inning and three in the second. Bucknell tried to match the Quakers in the third inning when Stackhouse hit a double to allow Jill Pompeii and Alyssa Schneebaum to score, but fell short. Penn recorded five more runs during the third and fourth innings. Stackhouse snatched her third RBI of the day after assisting Schneebaum home. Haskins started pitching for the Bison in the second game of the day and Julie Williams relieved her in the bottom of the fourth.
Penn gave up three hits to the Bison, while recording 10 hits themselves.
Bucknell started the 2003 season 0-2 over all. The Bison are scheduled to play on Monday, Mar. 10, at 2:20 p.m. against George Mason and at 6 p.m. against Fairfield.
