DENVER, Colo. - Senior Suzanne Raffaele added three more goals to her season total, but it was not enough as the Bucknell women's lacrosse team dropped an 11-8 decision to the University of Denver on Tuesday, March 11, 2003. The goals were Raffaele's team-leading fourth, fifth and sixth of the year.
Denver got on the scoreboard first when Mariana Spry notched a goal just 13 seconds into it. Bison junior Meredith Wright tied the contest less than two minutes later when she found the back of the net off a pass from classmate Laura Nuss. That was as close as the Orange and Blue would get, however, as the Pioneers went on to score five of the next six goals to take a commanding 6-2 lead.
Nuss broke the Bucknell scoring drought with 7:41 left in the first half, before Raffaele tallied less than a minute later, assisted by Wright, to make it a 6-4 game. Denver scored once more before the break to carry a 7-4 lead into the second half.
The Bison held the Pioneers scoreless for the first 12:21 of the second stanza, and two Raffaele goals during that time brought the squad within 7-6. When the host team finally did get the offense rolling, however, it scored four-straight to jump out to its largest lead of the game at 11-6.
Freshman Victoria Field snapped a 10 minute Bucknell drought with her first goal of the season, before Wright rounded out the scoring with a tally with 4:24 to go in the game.
Senior Nicole Kallis played the whole game in goal, stopping 11 shots.
Bucknell falls to 1-2 overall. The Orange and Blue will return from Denver to play at Patriot League rival American on Saturday, March 15, at 1:00 p.m.
