BRADENTON, Fla. - On day two of their spring break trip at IMG Academy Park, Bucknell defeated Harvard 4-0 and evened their record at 1-1 behind a complete game shutout performance by junior Kevin Miller. Sam Moss led the Bison at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Harvard fell to 3-2.
In Bucknell's half of the first, junior Ben Stoll led off with a single and moved over to second on Moss's sacrifice bunt. However, Harvard starter Trey Hendricks retired the next two Bison batters to strand Stoll.
The Bucknell offense would not be denied in the second, however. Brian Hirschberg, who reached on a fielders' choice, raced home from third on a double steal as Harvard failed to throw out B.J. Batterson at second. Hendricks worked out of the jam again, striking out the next two Bison hitters, stranding Batterson in scoring position.
Miller surrendered only one base hit through four innings, a two-out double by Hendricks in the fourth. In the fifth, Miller's heads-up fielding helped squander Harvard's best scoring opportunity of the game. With one out and runners on second and third, Miller fielded a sharp comebacker and trapped Harvard's Brian Lentz in a rundown between third and home. Catcher Phil Bunting tagged out Lentz and fired to first to nail the hitter A.J. Solomine diving back into the bag.
Bucknell added a run in the fifth as Moss's RBI single drove home junior Chris Mahony. Mahony led off the inning with a base hit and stole second base to get into scoring position.
Another Harvard error in the eighth coupled with an RBI double by freshman Kyle Walter pushed across two more Bison runs. The 4-0 lead was enough for Miller, who fielded the final out in the ninth to seal the victory.
Miller allowed just six hits and struck out eight against two walks. Stoll collected two hits to go along with Moss's three for the Bison, who stole four bases as a team. Lentz and second baseman Ian Wallace each had two hits for the losers.
The Bison play again Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 pm against the University of Rhode Island.
