Bucknell's Freese & Garvin Named Co-Bison Athletes of the Week for Swimming

LEWISBURG, Pa. - With seven combined gold medals and six total school records, juniors Meghan Freese (New Freedom, Pa./ Susquehannock) and Peter Garvin (Silver Spring, Md./ Our Lady of Good Counsel) were named co-Bull Run Inn Bison Athletes of the Week, Tuesday, Feb. 23.
The Bucknell men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up a historic weekend in Kinney Natatorium on Feb. 22, bringing Patriot League championships to Lewisburg for the first time in the history of either program.
Both juniors assisted their teams to championship victories. The women's swimming and diving team captured first place with 812.50 points, while the men compiled 701 points. It is the first time in Patriot League history that one school claimed both the men's and women's titles in the same season.
Freese earned two individual gold medals, three first-place finishes in relays and qualified provisionally for NCAA's. She also set four new school records. The junior broke the school record in the 50-freestyle with a time of 23.32, which also qualified her for the NCAA "B" team. Freese also received a gold in the 100-freestyle touching the wall at 51.09, which was only one-hundredth of a second slower than her school record preliminary swim.
With a 1:34.94 finish, Freese assisted the 200-freestyle relay team to a gold medal. She also swam the closing split of the 400-medley relay with a finishing time of 3:49.54, while set new school, meet, and league records. Freese captured her final gold while swimming the final split in the 200-medley relay and broke the school, league and meet records with a time of 1:44.35. The junior's only non-medal race was in 100-backstroke with a time 59.24, where she captured fourth-place.
Garvin anchored the men's team with three gold medals and two silver awards. On Friday, the junior earned his first gold medal in the 100-freestyle touching, the wall at 45.58. With a time of 20.52, he grabbed a first-place finish in the 50-free.
Adding another gold medal to his plate, Garvin backed the 200-freestyle relay squad to a 1:22.17 finish. Breaking the school record, Garvin assisted the Bison to a silver medal in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:32.00. He also assisted the men's 400-medley relay to another silver medal with a 3:22.93 finish, which also set a new school record.
