Bucknell's Men's and Women's Swimmers and Divers Lead after Day One of Bucknell Trials/Finals Invite

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bison women won three events and the men won two events in the finals portion of day one of the Bucknell Trials/Finals Invite held at Kinney Natatorium. Ten events were contested each on the men's and women's side. Bucknell's men's team, with 557 leads the competition by a comfortable 114 ?-point margin over Delaware, which has 442 ?, New Hampshire, which has 352 ?, and LaSalle, which has 351. The women lead by 80 ? with 582 points to LaSalle's 501 ?, Delaware's 334 ?, and New Hampshire's 253.
"We swam well tonight, we had enthusiasm and team spirit. I'm pretty pleased with today's performances and we're ready to get back at it tomorrow. The divers dove exceptionally well," said Bucknell Head Coach Jerry Foley.
Both the Bucknell men and Bucknell women won the evening's first event, the 200-free relay. On the women's side, Rebecca Scheffter, Mary Krakowski, Laura Goeller, and Meghan Freese finished the race on 1:39.26, about a half-second ahead of New Hampshire's relay team. Bucknell's men's team of Jake Thieman, Ian Rawhausser, Michael Willats, and Peter Garvin finished in 1:25.78, more than two seconds better than LaSalle's squad.
The Bison were kept out of the top spot in the next six events until the 100-breast, when Jamie Flick won in 1:05.63, ahead of New Hampshire's Shannon Daly (1:06.30). Bucknell's women had their last event triumph of the night when Meghan Freese won the 50-free for the third time in four meets, finishing in 24.03 ahead of Delaware's Jill Fitzgerald (24.67).
The men echoed the women's 50-free win as the Bison men took the top three spots. Thieman finished the race in 21.78, Garvin in second at 21.84, and Willats third in 22.17. In the following event, the women's 200-IM, freshman Laura Goeller moved up a spot on the school's all-time list, finishing the race in 2:10.66. The time was good enough for third in the race, and eighth all-time.
Bucknell's divers took the opportunity to write their names in the school record book in the one-meter competition. All four of Bucknell's divers recorded top-10 times in the 11-dive version of the one-meter competition, with Sarah Petcavage totaling a new school record with 376.45 points. Kit Watkins of LaSalle won the competition with 415.90 points. Victoria Fritz, third all-time with 343.70 points, Monica Smith, sixth all-time with 294.65 points, and Erica Minerowicz, ninth all-time with 288.70 points, included themselves in the top-10 lists on the women's side. Both of Bucknell's men's divers did the same, with Joseph Duncan taking third all-time, and third in the competition, with 365.20 points, and Jake Thompson fifth all-time with 363.70 points.
The Bison will conclude competition, both for the weekend and for 2003, on Sunday. Bucknell will head to Florida from Jan. 3-11 for a training trip, and return to inter-squad competition on January 17 against Colgate at Kinney Natatorium. The Bison women are 3-0 in the league, and the Bison men are 0-3, each team having taken on Navy, Army, and American.
