THIS EVENING'S GAME: The Bison women's squad returns to action after a 13-day layoff for finals, hosting Akron for the first of two home games this weekend.
Bucknell comes into the contest looking to jump start the season after taking third at the Cornell Classic with a 69-61 win over Winthrop in the consolation game, improving to 2-4. The Zips have an identical 2-4 record, most recently defeating Wright State (62-59) on the road. Akron's other win is a 60-49 win over Cleveland State.
THE SERIES: Bucknell and Akron have met two times in the past nine years with each team winning one game.
The Zips won the first game in the series history, taking a 55-52 decision at Akron on December 4, 1994.
The Orange and Blue have the most recent victory, defeating Akron 64-49 last season in the consolation game of the Saint Peter's Holiday Classic on December 30, 2002.
LAST TIME OUT: Bucknell held a nine-point halftime advantage, and led by as many as 12 in the second half, on its way to a 69-61 victory over Winthrop in the consolation game of the Cornell Classic (12/6/03).
The Bison got a 22 point, 16 rebound effort from senior Desire Almind en route to All-Tournament honors for the 6-0 guard/forward. Freshman Lindsey Hollobaugh was also impressive with 16 points, while freshman Rachel Hanley chipped in with 10.
ALMIND HONORED BY PATRIOT LEAGUE: Before Bucknell's 13-day layoff for finals, senior Desire Almind registered one of the best weeks of her career (Dec. 1-7). The Bison played three games that week, with Almind averaging 24.3 points per game, 15.0 rebounds per game, and 3.3 blocks each time out.
On the strength of a career-high 33 point outing, and a selection to the Cornell Classic All-Tournament team, Almind was tabbed the Patriot League Player of the Week for the first time in her career.
HOLLOBAUGH ALSO HONORED: For the second-straight week, freshman Lindsey Hollobaugh was selected as the Patriot League Rookie of the Week after Bucknell's 1-2 week ending 12/7/03.
Hollobaugh averaged 15.0 points per game that week with a pair of 16-point efforts at the Cornell Classic.
FEDORJAKA NEARING MILESTONE: Bucknell women's basketball head coach Kathy Fedorjaka is nearing a coaching milestone for her tenure at the helm of the Bison program. Fedorjaka needs just four more victories to become the first Bucknell women's basketball mentor to reach 100 victories at the Lewisburg school.
When Fedorjaka eclipses the milestone, she will be just the third active Patriot League coach to accumulate over 100 victories while at a Patriot League institution (Bill Gibbons - Holy Cross, Sue Troyan - Lehigh).
ALMIND AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS: Senior Desire Almind is playing some of her best basketball right now, just six games into the 2003-04 season.
The 6-0 guard/forward is ranked nationally in three different categories, including the second-best rebounding average in the country at 13.7 rpg. The national leader is UNLV's Sherry McCracklin with 13.8.
Almind is also 18th in blocks per game with 2.7, and 27th in scoring with 20.0 ppg.
