Bison Swimming and Diving Compete in Bucknell Sprint Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa., -- The Bison opened their regular season today with the Bucknell Sprint Invitational, hosting Bloomsburg, Penn, and West Chester at Kinney Natatorium in the one-day, non-scoring event.
Through the morning session, the Bison women entered their names on two of Bucknell's all-time top-10 lists while winning two relay events. In the first event of the day, Rebecca Scheffter, Mary Krakowski, Laura Goeller, and Meghan Freese swam the 200 freestyle relay in 1:38.68, the seventh-best time in that relay in school history. Later in the morning session, the Bison won the 15th event of the day, the 400 medley relay, in the ninth-best time in Bucknell history. Freese and Krakowski joined Lectie Altman and Jamie Flick to finish the relay in 3:59.15.
The highest Bucknell finish on the men's side occurred in three events, where the Bison finished third in two relays and Peter Garvin took third in the 50 butterfly in 24.04. In the second event of the day, the Bison men finished behind the `A' teams from West Chester and Penn to finish the 200 freestyle relay in 1:26.81. In the morning's last event, the 400 medley relay, the Bison men finished behind the `A' teams from West Chester and Penn in 3:37.38.
On the women's side, in addition to the two all-time top-10 performances, the Bison women won the 50 butterfly, with Krakowski's 26.82 finish, as well as the 100 backstroke, with Altman's 59.80 finish, the 50 breaststroke, with Flick's meet-record :31.07, and the 100 freestyle, with Freese's meet-record :52.63.
In total, the Bucknell women won six of the eight women's events, with Penn taking the other two, including the 500 freestyle and the 100 individual medley. The West Chester men were the big winners on the men's side, taking six of the eight events while Bloomsburg won two.
The one-meter dive was also part of the morning session, as West Chester swept the event with Michael Bergen's 229.35 points on the men's side, and Lori Pietzsch's 219.65 points on the women's side. Bucknell got both second-place spots, with Jake Thompson racking up 226.65 points, and Sarah Petcavage accruing 192.85 points.
The evening session started well for the women's side, as Altman, Flick, Krakowski and Freese teamed up again to claim first in the 200 medley relay. With a time of 1:49.50, the foursome set a new meet record, in addition to taking the gold. The women's team took five other first-place finishes in the final session.
Daniela Faas clocked in at 4:38.24 in the 400 IM for first place, while Nikki Woodward took third in the event in 4:40.31. In the very next event, the 100 butterfly, Krakowski grabbed her second individual gold of the day with a time of 1:00.14. In the 50 backstroke, Freese and Altman finished one-two for the Bison in times of 27.68 and 28.56, respectively. Freese then set a meet record in the 50 freestyle with her time of 24.02. Rounding out the gold medal finishers was Petcavage, who took the three-meter diving event with a score of 216.00.
On the men's side, the Orange and Blue had three silver medal winners in the evening session. The group of Jake Thieman, Michael Harrigan, Michael Willats and Peter Garvin came in second behind West Chester's foursome in a time of 3:15.51 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Individually, William Schilling took second in the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:00.42. Jake Duncan was Bucknell's other silver medalist, taking second in the three-meter dive with a total of 214.70.
The men's 200 medley relay squad also fared well, claiming third in the event in a time of 1:39.35.
The Bison get their dual meet seasons started next weekend when they travel to Navy for a tri-meet against Patriot League rivals Navy and American at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, November 14.
