WORCESTER, Mass. - The Bucknell field hockey team completed its season this afternoon with a 2-1 overtime defeat to Holy Cross in the semifinal of the Patriot League Tournament at Worcester, Mass. It was the second 2-1 loss of the year by Bucknell to the Crusaders, as Holy Cross spoiled the inaugural game at Graham Field on September 20, also 2-1.
The third-seeded Bison stayed even with Holy Cross until 18:51 into the first half, when Jillian LeClair slipped one past Bucknell goalie Liz Jordan off an assist from Heather Yanusas. Bucknell pulled even when freshman Callista Costopoulos scored just her third goal of the season, though by far the most important, with four minutes to go in the half. The score came on a penalty corner with assists by Meiko Boynton and Lindsey Gentel.
Both teams were kept off the board for the entire second half, though Jenna Cook applied the unassisted clincher for Holy Cross 8:05 into overtime to put the Crusaders into the league final.
Bucknell out-shot the Crusaders 12-9 and led the hosts in penalty corners 14-5. Holy Cross' defense responded, with not only seven saves by goalkeeper Jennifer Corsilli, but two defensive saves. Liz Jordan had four saves.
Overtime had not been kind to the Bison this season, as Bucknell won just one of the four extra-time games this year. The Bison went into extra time for the first time this season at La Salle on October 7, losing 2-1 in the second round of penalty strokes. Bucknell fell again on October 25 at Fairfield, 1-0, before winning an overtime game 3-2 at Towson on October 28.
The Bison finish their season with a 9-8 record, 3-3 in conference. One Bison will represent Bucknell again this season when Lindsey Gentel suits up for the "south" squad at the NFHCA Senior All-Star Game held in conjunction with the NCAA Final Four later this month.
Holy Cross moves on to face top seed American in the Patriot League final Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Eagles were a 3-2 overtime winner over fourth-seeded Lafayette earlier today, and knocked off Holy Cross earlier this season, 3-0. Saturday's winner will host Northeast Conference champion Quinnipiac on Nov. 11 in the CCA play-in game to the NCAA Tournament.
