LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell junior men's soccer player Jonathan Hemmert (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) has been named to the 2003-04 Academic All-American University Division Men's Soccer Team, announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Hemmert is making his first career appearance on the national team, becoming just the third player in Bison men's soccer history to earn a spot on the squad and only the second on the first team.
Bucknell's past Academic All-America's are Greg Beatty (1993 - 1st team, 1994 - 2nd team) and Ryan Weber (2001 - 2nd team).
In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a player must be at least a sophomore and a starter or significant reserve on his/her team, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better.
A starter in 12 of 18 games in 2003, Hemmert continued his play as Bucknell's setup man. After recording no assists in his first year of play, the midfielder racked up 17 helpers in the last two years, including seven this season which places him ninth on the Bucknell single-season list. His 10 assists a year ago was the third best single-season total in school history.
Hemmert is not only breaking into the Bucknell charts, but he is leaving a dent on the Patriot League annals as well. His career total for assists puts him in a tie for ninth on the conference all-time list with one more season to go.
In addition to his assists, Hemmert also scored two goals this season for 11 points. One of his scores was a game-winning penalty kick to lift the Bison past Monmouth, 1-0. Of his four career goals, two have come by way of game-winning penalty kicks.
In the classroom, Hemmert has been equally successful, maintaining a 3.89 grade point average. He is a member of the University's Dean's List and the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. In addition, he is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and was selected to the 2002-03 Academic All-District First-Team.
The Orange and Blue finished the season 11-7-2 overall and 5-0-2 in the Patriot League. BU completed the first unbeaten PL season in school history, in the process claiming the regular-season title for just the third time.
Bucknell University is third in the nation in Division I (to Nebraska and Notre Dame) for total number of national Academic All-America selections. With the addition of Hemmert, a total of 107 Bison student-athletes have received national Academic All-America recognition since 1970.
