WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's team stayed undefeated in Patriot League dual meets on the young season with a 125-118 win over Army, but the men's team was unable to get its first dual meet win of the season as Army prevailed, 139-92.
Army kept the women's meet close by limiting back-to-back Patriot League Women's Swimmer of the Week Meghan Freese to just one win on the day. Against Navy and American in last week's tri-meet, Freese won both of her individual events and both of her relays, but took only the 100 free against Army. Her time of 53.58 seconds netted Bucknell nine points.
But her teammates filled in where Freese was stifled. Lectie Altman, Jamie Flick, Mary Krakowski, and Lynne Ashenfelter teamed to win the 400 medley relay in 4:02.27 in the first event of the meet. Daniela Faas won the next women's event, the 1000 free, in 10:34.96, while Bucknell athletes took second in the next three races. Nikki Woodward supplied the next Bucknell win, taking the 200 fly in 2:11.89, right before Freese's 100 free win. Altman won the next women's event, the 200 back, in 2:07.06, with Tricia Rado and Katherine Munson right behind her recording points for Bucknell. Jamie Flick won the last women's individual event of the night, the 200 breast, in 2:26.17.
The men's team recorded its first event win of the season in the 200 back, when Ian Rawhausser won the race in 1:55.33, almost three seconds ahead of Army's Ross Artley (1:58.11). Rawhausser's success started a string of Bucknell wins, as the Bison men preceeded to take the one-meter dive, the 200 breast, and the 400 free relay. Jake Thompson earned 234.83 points for the diving win, while William Schilling swam the 200 breast in 2:10.84, and Jake Thieman, John Hoffman, Michael Willats, and Peter Garvin teamed to win the relay in 3:13.44.
Bucknell will have Thanksgiving weekend off, but jump back in the pool for the last time in 2003 for the Bucknell Trials-Finals Invitational at home on Dec. 6-7 with New Hampshire, Fordham, La Salle, and Delaware. Following winter break and the yearly training trip to Florida, the Bison will swim against Colgate on Jan. 17, 2004 at Kinney Natatorium.
