LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team fell to American this afternoon, 3-2, at Graham Field in the home finale of the 2003 season. In a game marked by intense play on both sides, two goals by American senior Melissa Snyder helped lift the Eagles to the win, clinching a perfect 6-0 Patriot League season for the visitors.
Snyder's first goal came just under 17 minutes into the first half when she snuck a rebound from the previous penalty corner shot past Bucknell goalkeeper Liz Jordan to put the Eagles on the board. The teams went into the halftime break with American's one-goal advantage, though Snyder was able to put American up by two on a roller up the middle of the goal box more than five minutes into the second half.
Bucknell responded under three minutes later in much the same way American earned its first goal, as penalty corner shooter Callista Costopoulos pushed a pass to Meiko Boynton, who was waiting at the left edge of the goal box for the tip-in. Five minutes later, Alex Kyzmir had a breakaway and dished to Kelly O'Brien for the goal as American defenders caught up with the freshman Kyzmir.
But the even footing would not last long, as Camila Infante scored for American less than a minute after off a penalty corner from Maureen Daniel in what would prove to be the game winner despite a fervent comeback attempt on the part of the Bison.
Bucknell had eight shots resulting in two saves for Laura Miller of American, while the Eagles had 24 shots resulting in 12 saves for Jordan. American had 13 penalty corners to Bucknell's seven.
Before the game, Bison senior defenders Kate Ruda and Lindsey Gentel were honored for their Bucknell careers upon their last game in Lewisburg. Though the loss marked the end of the regular season, Bucknell's 3-3 league mark is good enough to admit the Bison into the Patriot League tournament next weekend in Worcester, Mass. Bucknell will face Holy Cross in the opening round of the tournament at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7. The Bison and Crusaders will follow the American-Lafayette game, which takes place at noon on Friday. The two winners will meet on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the league championship and a berth in the CCA play-in game to the NCAA Tournament.
