ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Bucknell men's soccer team entered its game with Navy on Saturday, November 1, needed just a tie to clinch the Patriot League regular-season title, and claim the right to host the conference tournament for the first time since the 1990-91 season, the first year of the league's existence. The Bison left no doubt with a 2-0 victory over the Midshipmen, improving to 5-0-1 in conference play with one league contest remaining.
BU wasted little time on its way to the shutout victory. Sophomore Eric Brunton scored his fourth of the year just 4:46 into the game. Classmate Scott Visnic headed a ball into the post, and Brunton was there to finish on the rebound for the early 1-0 lead. The assist was Visnic's third of the season, giving him a league-high 25 points on the year.
With 15 minutes left until halftime, junior Jonathan Hemmert added an insurance goal, one-timing senior Brian King's pass from the wing past Navy keeper Frank DiFilippo. It was Hemmert's second goal of the season.
The Bison dominated offensively, firing off 18 shots to the Mids eight. Bucknell goalkeeper Adam Edwards made two saves on his way to his seventh shutout of the year, and the 17th of his career, moving him into sole possession of eighth place on the Patriot League career list.
DiFilippo ended the contest with five stops.
The Orange and Blue improve to 10-6-1 overall and 5-0-1 in Patriot League play. BU steps out of league action to travel to Maryland, the second-ranked team in the country, at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 4. Navy falls to 5-9-1 overall and 3-3-0 in conference action.
Bucknell closes out the regular-season hosting Holy Cross on Saturday, November 8, at 2:00 p.m. The Patriot League tournament will take place November 14 and 16.
