PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Sophomore Scott Visnic scored three goals, and three other players tallied for Bucknell, as the Bison men's soccer squad defeated Philadelphia, 6-3, in a wild non-conference game on Tuesday, October 14.
After several two-on-one scoring opportunities in the early stages of the opening half, Visnic finally got Bucknell on the board with 17:09 gone in the first half. Senior Brian King was credited with the assist on the play, the first point of his career.
With just under two minutes to go in the half, sophomore Eric Brunton notched his second of the season, taking a pass from senior Chris Beekman, drawing the Rams goalkeeper Justin Hewins, and trickling the ball across the line for the 2-0 lead.
The Orange and Blue would carry the 2-0 advantage into halftime.
The second half was full of excitement. Philadelphia got on the board at the 54:38 minute mark when John Havrilla finished Sherwin Forde's cross into the top right corner. Less than six minutes later, Franco Ruscetta scored on Chris Williams' throw-in from the left side, burying the ball in the back right to tie the game 2-2.
Bucknell wasted little time regaining the lead when Visnic tallied his second of the game just 2:01 later. Juniors Jonathan Hemmert and Ori Adrabi were credited with assists on the play.
With the Orange and Blue up 3-2, Rams' senior Lou Sigmund was ejected from the game at the 65:13 mark after receiving a red card for fighting. For the second game in a row, the Bison played the final 25 minutes a man-up. The Bucknell defense failed, however, against the Philadelphia squad, giving up a goal with 13:07 left to tie the contest 3-3.
That's when the Bucknell offense came alive. BU scored three goals in an eight-minute span to put the game away. Visnic scored his 11th of the season, taking a pass from Brunton. Freshman Sam Camens followed with his first of the year, assisted by Adrabi and Matthew Arias, and Adrabi finished the scoring on a Whitaker assist.
Both Bucknell goalkeeper Adam Edwards and Rams keeper Hewins finished the game with eight saves.
The six goals by the Bison are the most scored by the team since the 1994 season when BU defeated Kutztown 6-0.
Bucknell improves to 8-5-0 with the victory. The Bison host Lehigh on Saturday, October 18, for a 3:00 p.m. Patriot League clash. Philadelphia falls to 5-7-0.
