TELFORD, Pa. - Freshman Charlie Waddell carded a five-over-par 77 to secure his second top-10 finish of the fall and Bucknell shot 315 as a team on Monday to move up three spots and finish in seventh place at the Don Mershon Classic, hosted by Lehigh at Indian Valley CC.
After taking an 11-shot lead to the clubhouse with a first-round 300, the host Mountain Hawks struggled with a 318 on Monday and had to defeat Siena in a playoff to hold on to the team title. The Saints shot 305 in the final round to make up the gap.
Fordham took third place with a team total of 625, seven shots out of the playoff. Drexel (626), Delaware (631) and Lafayette (632) also finished ahead of the Bison, whose 322-315 represented their two highest scores of the season. Bucknell had not shot higher than 309 this fall.
Four of Bucknell's five players improved their scores from round one to round two, including Waddell, who finished in a tie for ninth with rounds of 78-77. Sophomore Tom Lane also carded two rounds in the 70s with 78-79 and tied for 14th.
Abbie Valentine, Bucknell's scoring leader at 73.5 entering the tournament, had uncharacteristic rounds of 85 and 79. Also for the Bison, Alex Dolle shot 82-80 and Ben Pellicani toured the lengthy, 6,859-yard course in 84-81.
Lehigh's Nam Kyu Park won medallist honors in a playoff over Fordham's Gabe Allen. Both players shot 149 for 36 holes.
Bucknell has one fall tournament remaining, next Friday and Saturday at the Hofstra Invitational.
