ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Seniors Molly Creamer and Kate Franks, and junior Desire Almind combined to score 66 of Bucknell's 74 points as the Bison picked up their first Patriot League victory of the season at Navy, 74-65. The win was BU's 10th-straight over the Mids in the series.
Behind 10 points from Courtney Davidson, Navy jumped out to a 20-12 lead with 12:18 to play in the first half, despite Bucknell hitting five of their first seven shots. After a three-pointer by Creamer and a jumper by Davidson made the score 22-15 in Navy's favor, the Bison embarked on an 11-0 run that spanned just over five minutes to take a 26-22 lead. Franks had two of her five three-pointer's during the run, and freshman Jennie Ruth added four points.
A Bryanna Herring layup with 4:54 to go in the frame tied the game at 26-26, but Bucknell closed the half by outscoring the Mids 9-2, including six from Almind, to enter the locker room with a 37-28 lead.
Bucknell opened up a 13-point lead, 41-28, just three minutes into the second before the Navy defense went to work. The Bison were held scoreless for nearly five minutes, and the Mids forced four BU turnovers during that stretch, while also chipping away at the lead to get within one, 41-40. A Franks steal and layup broke the Orange and Blue drought, but Davidson answered with a trey at the other end to knot the game at 43-43.
The Bison pushed it back to a six-point game, but Navy came charging back with six free throws and a jumper to take its first lead since the first half, 51-49. It was short lived, however, as BU tied the game on two Creamer free throws, and regained the advantage on a Lindsey Geosits jumper with 6:30 to play. The Mids got within one after a Davidson three-pointer, but that was as close as the host team would get the rest of the way.
Clinging to a 58-56 lead, the Bison got two huge offensive rebounds off of missed free throws to go ahead 63-56. Bucknell was 9-of-10 from the foul line in the final 2:14 of the contest to come away with a 74-65 victory.
Creamer and Franks led the squad with 23 points each. Franks, who was 4-for-4 from three-point range at one point, finished the contest 5-of-7 from downtown. Almind posted her fourth double-double of the year with 20 points and 10 rebounds on 8-of-10 shooting.
Davidson paced all players with 27 points. She was the only Navy player in double figures.
The Orange and Blue were hot from the field, shooting 58.7% for the game after a 66.7% showing in the second half.
Bucknell improves to 6-9 overall and 1-2 in the Patriot League. The Bison return home to host Army on Friday, January 24, at 5:30 p.m. Navy falls to 10-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
