LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior quarterback Todd Wenrich threw three touchdown passes for the first time in his career and finished with 187 passing yards to lead Bucknell to a 27-13 non-league victory over Delaware State Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
After two straight road losses to open the season, Bucknell has now won two straight at home to level its record at 2-2. The Bison have now won 14 straight non-conference home games.
Delaware State lost its third consecutive contest and is now 2-3 overall.
Bucknell's punt defense set up a pair of first-quarter scores to stake the Bison to a 10-0 lead. First, Anthony Lewis blocked a Zach Bussey punt at the Delaware State 40-yard line, and five plays later Wenrich connected with Jim Horan on a 10-yard touchdown pass. Later in the quarter, a botched punt snap gave the Bison a first down at the DSU 44, resulting in a Chris Lundberg 41-yard field goal.
The Hornets still trailed 10-0 into the third quarter when DaShaun Morris outleaped a defender for a 33-yard touchdown pass from Kittrell Barnes.
Bucknell appeared to be stopped at midfield on the next series, but the Bison faked a punt on 4th-and-1, and Mike Leatherman ran 42 yards to the Delaware State 8. On the very next play, Wenrich hit wide-open tight end Ken Lockard for a touchdown and a 17-7 lead.
The momentum swung right back in the Hornets favor seconds later, though, as Morris returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown - his third kickoff return TD of the season. Bucknell's Will Smith partially deflected the point-after attempt, leaving the score 17-13.
Bucknell iced the game with a 13-play, 89-yard scoring drive, which was capped by Wenrich's 29-yard scoring strike to Albert Marquardt with 11:06 left in the fourth quarter. Bucknell converted three third downs on the drive, which chewed 5:01 off the clock.
Lundberg tacked on a 37-yard field goal with 3:00 remaining to make it 27-13.
The Bison gained a season-high 394 total yards while holding Delaware State to 216, and Bucknell outrushed the Hornets 193-89.
Wenrich finished 19 of 32 for 187 yards and was not intercepted. Horan had a season-high seven catches for 90 yards. Barnes was 11 of 22 for 127 yards and was picked off once.
Freshman Blamah Sarnor made his second straight start for Bucknell and carried 20 times for 79 yards. Barnes was the Hornets top rusher 38 yards on 15 totes.
Bucknell opens Patriot League play next Saturday against Colgate at Mathewson Stadium at 1 p.m. Delaware State hosts Hampton at 2 p.m.
