LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell graduate, Kevin McDowell, who plays for the Class-A West Michigan Whitecaps, was named the minor league pitcher of the month in July by the Detroit Tigers organization. McDowell went 5-1 during the month and posted a 1.28 earned-run average in six starts. McDowell was featured in the September issue of Baseball America.
The lefthander, the nephew of former major leaguer Sam McDowell, graduated from Bucknell in December 2000 with a business management degree. He made his pro debut in the spring of 2001. This summer, McDowell is part of a trio of lefthanders at the top of the West Michigan rotation that helped the Whitecaps clinch a Midwest League wild-card playoff berth in the first half and an Eastern Division title in the second half. McDowell showed tremendous improvement in his control in 2002, when he struck out 123, walked 64 and allowed 156 hits in 166 1/3 innings.
He finished the season with an 11-6 record and a 2.60 ERA. The Whitecaps completed the season 83-57 in the Midwest League. West Michigan advanced to the semi-finals and fell to Lansing, 2-1, in a three game series.
