NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Bucknell sophomore Jaime Hays lopped three strokes off the school 18-hole scoring record, carding a four-over-par 74 in the opening round of the Yale Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Bison stand in seventh place in the 12-team field with a team score of 323.
Hays shot 36 on the back nine after going out in 38. Her previous career-best round was 80, coming at last October's Lady Pirate Invitational at East Carolina. The previous Bucknell single-round record was 77, accomplished five times, most recently by Molly Campbell earlier this season.
Campbell backed up Hays with a 79 on Saturday, followed by scores of 85 from Jess Hetrich and Kelly Evans. Julie Fetterman, in her first collegiate event, shot 90.
After compiling a team total of 293, Penn State leads the tournament by eight strokes over host Yale. Brown (312), Boston College (319), Georgetown (319) and Penn (321) are also ahead of the Bison.
Rutgers (329), Harvard (330), Dartmouth (334), Central Connecticut (352) and Hartford (358) round out the field.
Penn State's Katie Futcher has the individual lead after firing a 3-under 67. Hays is tied for six place, while Campbell is tied for 14th.
Play resumes on Sunday, with Bucknell scheduled for tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m.
