Bucknell dropped a heartbreaker at St. Mary's (Calif.), 23-22 in double overtime, to fall to 0-2 for the first time since 1991 ... the Bison trailed 16-9 but tied the game on freshman Blamah Sarnor's 8-yard touchdown run with 36 seconds remaining in regulation ... Bucknell's defense kept St. Mary's off the board to start the first overtime, with SS Billy Windle's sack knocking the Gaels out of field goal range ... K Chris Lundberg's potential game-winning, 37-yard field goal sailed barely wide right in the "bottom" of the first OT, giving St. Mary's new life ... Bucknell had the ball first in the second overtime and took the lead for the first time in the game on QB Todd Wenrich's 27-yard TD pass to WR Albert Marquardt, but the extra point was wide left, leaving Bucknell's lead at six points at 22-16 ... Andre Coleman tied it with a 6-yard TD run and Ezequiel Arevalo's PAT won it for the Gaels ... it was Bucknell's fifth all-time overtime contest (3-2) ... Lundberg provided all of Bucknell's offense in the first half with three field goals (45, 37, 34), helping erase a 9-0 deficit ... the 45-yarder was Lundberg's longest since 2000, when he made a career-long 47-yarder ... Sarnor saw the first extended playing time of his young career and was terrific on Bucknell's dramatic tying drive in the fourth quarter ... Sarnor finished the game with a team-high 42 yards on 13 carries, with 18 yards coming on the tying drive ... Wenrich left the game briefly with a foot injury, but returned to engineer Bucknell's 13-play, 80-yard drive that tied the game at 16-16 late in regulation ... Wenrich finished 12 of 20 for 181 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions ... sophomore QB Kyle Fields replaced Wenrich, but Fields was injured after a 7-yard scramble and was replaced by classmate Cole Ciesnolevicz ... Ciesnolevicz played two more series and was 4 of 9 for 31 yards, but was intercepted twice ... St. Mary's entered the game ranked seventh in Division I-AA in rushing offense at 314.5 yards per game, but the Bison limited the Gaels to only 107 rushing yards (90 at the end of regulation) ... Bucknell outgained St. Mary's 316-219 and held the ball for 35:12 ... the Bison defense forced four turnovers - all fumbles ... all three Lundberg field goals in the first half followed fumble recoveries ... ILB Stephane Pluviose, ILB Kevin Ransome, CB Anthony Lewis and DT Pete Christathakis all recovered fumbles ... the Bison also sacked Gaels QB Trevor Johnston six times, including two by Windle ... OLB Joe Massey recorded his 19th career sack, leaving him in fourth place on Bucknell's all-time list ... Massey led the Bison with 11 tackles (9 solo) ... CB Adam Minggia and TE Ken Lockard made their first career starts filling in for the injured Jerome Acy (back) and Dave Gibson (concussion), respectively ... sophomore TE Ian Nutt collected his first collegiate reception ... senior WR Jim Horan caught two passes for 34 yards ... he moved past Dan Scocca (1987-90) and Rich Lemon (1993-96) into third place on Bucknell's career receptions list with 130 ... he is 43 catches shy of Tom Mitchell's record ... St. Mary's win was its first in four tries against Bucknell ... the Orange and Blue have dropped four straight road games dating back to last season ... next week the Bison will host Cornell, seeking to avoid their first 0-3 start since 1988 ... Bucknell's home opener will kick off at 7 p.m. ... it will be the Big Red's season opener.
