Bison Women's Tennis Competes at Eastern Collegiate Women's Tennis Championship

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Senior Jill Wurzburg and junior Samantha Berthod, playing at number one doubles, headlined a successful Bucknell women's tennis team on the first day at the Eastern Collegiate Women's Tennis Championships, held at Army on Friday-Sunday, September 13-15.
Wurzburg and Berthod advanced to the quarterfinal round of the championship bracket with a bye in the first round and an 8-5 victory over Courtney James and Mary Jane McGuire of Manhattan.
Also playing in doubles for Bucknell was freshman Chelsea Mills. Due to a sudden illness to fellow freshman Rebecca Kral, Mills was teamed up with an Albany player, Lisa Fund. Mills and Fund dropped their opening round match to Emily Hughes and Brooke Yablonski of Pittsburgh, 8-3, before receiving two byes and falling to Leah Gaunt of Army and Ashley Ward of Stony Brook, 8-0, in the quarterfinal round of the back draw.
In singles play, freshman Veronica Brown, seeded fifth out of 32 players in the second flight, has advanced to the quarterfinal round with a bye and a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Tina Hoang of Quinnipiac. Sophomore Tanya Sichko was also the fifth seed at flight three. Sichko dropped her first match, 6-2, 6-2, to Amanda Doetsch of Marist, before responding for a 6-1, 6-3 win over Fairfield's Erin Reeves.
Freshman Rheanna Gaskin made it through day one undefeated at number 4 singles. Gaskin handled Jillian Schalk of Hofstra, 6-0, 6-0, before defeating Quinnipiac's second-seeded Cristin Arahovites, 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, in the second round.
