LEWISBURG, Pa. - In observance of the one-year anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Western Pennsylvania, there will be a special pregame ceremony prior to Wednesday's Bucknell-Delaware State women's soccer game at Bucknell University's West Field.
The Bucknell community has several events planned for Sept. 11, including those involving the women's soccer game, which is the only scheduled sporting contest on campus on that day. The Bucknell ROTC will present the colors for the National Anthem, which will be performed by Bucknell senior Melissa Milanak.
A moment of silence will be observed for the victims of the tragedy and their families, as well as the efforts of the emergency personnel who heroically assisted in rescue efforts, many of whom gave their own lives. In addition, the Bucknell and Delaware State student-athletes will carry American flags as they are introduced, and the flags will be given away to spectators before the game.
Game time is slated for 4 p.m., with pregame ceremonies beginning at 3:50 p.m.
Elsewhere on campus, the observance of the anniversary begins with the tolling of the Rooke Chapel carillon at 8:47 a.m., along with a campus-wide moment of silence. American Airlines Flight 11 collided with the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:47 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2001. At 5 p.m., there will be an all-campus gathering behind Rooke Chapel for a "Ceremony of Remembrance, Reflection and Renewal."
The Meditation Chapel at Rooke Chapel will be open all day as a sanctuary for gathering and reflecting on the events of September 11. Pictures, poetry and other graphic works will be on display. Additional space will be available for students to record their thoughts.
There will be special religious services Wednesday evening at 10 p.m., including a Roman Catholic Mass behind Rooke Chapel and a Jewish Ma'ariv Service at the Berelson Center for Religious Life (632 St. George St.).
