LEWISBURG, Pa. - The 2002 Bucknell football season officially kicked off with Wednesday's Media Day festivities at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Bison's first full-squad workouts will be held on Thursday, Aug. 15 with sessions at 8:15 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Some 92 players will be in camp as Bucknell prepares to open its 2002 campaign at Duquesne on Sept. 7. While the Bison were picked fourth in a preseason poll of head coaches and sports information directors, optimism is high on the eve of practice as the team returns many key players.
Among them are starting quarterback Todd Wenrich, All-America noseguard Adam Lord, and returning All-Patriot Leaguers in outside linebacker Joe Massey and wide receiver Jim Horan. The Bison should have exceptional depth at the wide receiver, running back/fullback, defensive line and linebacker positions, while new faces will be prevalent along the offensive line and defensive secondary.
Bucknell will also have plenty of new faces on the coaching staff, which will be led by veteran Dave Kotulski. Kurt Beathard (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks), John Allen (receivers), Paul McGonagle (running backs), Jared Backus (outside linebackers) and Eric Lewis (defensive backs) are all first-year members of the Bison staff.
"This group of players has an amazing amount of potential, but potential has never won a single game," said Kotulski at Wednesday's media gathering. "It is important over the next few weeks that this team come together as a unit and take care of their responsibilities. If everything comes together and we stay healthy, this team can be pretty good."
Bucknell practices are open to the public. For practice times, please contact the Office of Athletic Communications at 570-577-3121.
