Complete 2002 Football Schedule
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell will play five home football games in 2002, including three straight during the "good-weather" period of late September and early October. The Bison's complete 11-game fall schedule was officially announced Tuesday by the Bucknell Department of Athletics and Recreation.
Bucknell will open its season on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Duquesne. Another road game follows on Sept. 14, this time a cross-country trip to Moraga, Calif., to take on St. Mary's. The Bison made a similar trip in 1997 and defeated the Gaels 45-38.
The home slate opens on Sept. 21, with the first-ever college football game under the newly renovated lights in Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Bucknell will host Cornell for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Bison and Big Red meet for the first time in two seasons, as last year's meeting in Ithaca, N.Y., was cancelled in the wake of the September 11 tragedy.
The most recent addition to the schedule is a Sept. 28 home contest with Delaware State. The two teams have met only once previously, that a 38-28 Bison victory in 1999.
The three-game homestand concludes on Oct. 5, when the Bison open their Patriot League schedule on Parents' Weekend against Colgate.
Following a bye week on Oct. 12, Bucknell hits the road for three straight Patriot League contests, visiting Towson on Oct. 19, Georgetown on Oct. 26 and Holy Cross on Nov. 2.
A busy slate of Homecoming festivities is planned for Nov. 9, highlighted by the Bucknell-Lafayette game. Three of the past five games in this evenly matched series have been decided by two points or less, including last year's 17-16 Bucknell win in Easton, Pa.
On Nov. 16, Bucknell visits Goodman Stadium for a key late-season clash with four-time defending Patriot League champion Lehigh. A week later, the 2002 regular season wraps up with a home game against rapidly improving Fordham. The Bison will be looking to avenge 2001 losses to both the Mountain Hawks (21-14) and Rams (17-12).
With the exception of the Cornell game, all of Bucknell's home games will begin at 1 p.m.
Bucknell returns 13 starters and 32 lettermen from last year's squad that finished 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the Patriot League. Among the key returnees are First Team All-America defensive tackle Adam Lord, starting quarterback Todd Wenrich, First Team All-Patriot League linebacker Joe Massey and Second Team All-Patriot League wide receiver Jim Horan.
