LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior defenseman Kevin Smithies (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown H.S.) has been named an STX/USILA Honorable Mention All-American, capping off a stellar four-year career for the Bison men's lacrosse team.
It is the second straight year and 15th time overall that a Bucknell player has been named to the All-America squad, which is selected in a vote of head coaches. Mark Juelis was also an honorable mention pick in 2001.
One of the Patriot League's best close defensemen, Smithies was routinely assigned to the opposition's best offensive player. At 6'4" and 210 pounds, he was a physical presence who used a long reach to corral opposing attackmen.
Smithies was named a preseason Honorable Mention All-American by Inside Lacrosse and was a First Team All-Patriot League selection in 2002. He logged a team-high 57 ground balls this season, good for fifth in the league. He also helped the Bison become the Patriot League's top-rated defensive team, allowing only 8.77 goals per game.
He helped lead Bucknell to its third straight Patriot League title in 2002. The Bison finished 5-1 in league play, good for a first-place tie with Army and Hobart.
Smithies joins Army's Tim Pearson as the only Patriot Leaguers named to the All-America team. Three defensemen were named to each of the first, second and third teams, while 10 more were picked as honorable mentions, including Smithies.
