LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell student-athletes Lauren Campbell, Brooke Rea and Abby Weaver have been named to the Verizon District 2 Academic All-America At-Large Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
To be eligible for the team, the student-athlete must be at least a sophomore, a starter or key reserve, and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher.
A field hockey standout, Campbell topped off an incredible four-year career with the Bison during the 2001 fall season. The midfielder was named to the All-Mideast Region First Team, which qualified her for the national team. She then became the first Bucknell field hockey player to earn national All-America honors with a spot on the third team. Campbell is only the fifth Patriot League All-American in the sport of field hockey and the first non-Lafayette player. She was also an All-Patriot League selection in 2001 and was invited to the North-South All-Star Game.
A starter in all but one game for the Bison over the last three years, Campbell finished her senior season second on the team with 14 points (five goals, four assists). Two of her goals came in a 3-2 win over American in the Bison's season finale. She was also one of the team's top defenders, as she ranked among the Bucknell leaders with 44 interceptions and led the team with 68 positive tackles.
Off the field, Campbell carries a 3.73 grade-point average as a management major. She earned the 2001 Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
Rea, a member of the Bison women's water polo team, is a true leader, both in the water and out. An English major with a 3.87 grade-point average, she is a member of the University's Dean's List. She is also a two-time member of the American Water Polo Coaches Association All-Academic Outstanding team.
A co-captain on the 2002 squad, Rea concluded her athletic career with her first appearance on the Southern Division All-Conference Team. The 2-meter player capped a standout three-year career with a 69-point season in 2002. Finishing third on the squad in goals (50) and points, she broke the school record for career goals earlier in the year. In addition to her point totals, Rea was a team-leader on defense, recording a squad-best 41 ejections drawn and finishing second on the team in steals with 52.
For her career, Rea tallied 161 goals and 69 assists for 230 points. In addition to her Bucknell record setting goal total, she is also second on the career points list and third on the career assists list.
A captain of the Bucknell women's swimming & diving team, Weaver swam her way into the Bucknell record books with a fabulous four-year career at Bucknell. She will graduate with one school record and ranked among the University's all-time top-10 in eight other events.
Weaver played a major role in the Bison finishing second at the Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championship in each of the past two seasons. The freestyle/IM competitor swam in six events and came away with a pair of medals and one school record at the 2002 championship meet. She was part of Bucknell's 400-medley relay team that set a new school record and earned the silver in a time of 3:54.53. Weaver also swam on the 200-free relay team that won the bronze and recorded the second-fastest time in Bucknell history at 1:37.00. In addition, she placed fourth in the 50-free (24.72), sixth in the 100-free (53.39) and 10th in the 100-fly (1:00.47).
As a junior, Weaver earned All-Patriot League honors by scoring 43 points at the Patriot League Championship. She turned in a fourth-place showing in the 200-IM and placed fifth in both the 50-free and the 100-free.
Out of the pool, Weaver is an outstanding student who has maintained a 3.85 grade-point average as a mathematics major. She was named as the 2000-01 Patriot League Women's Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year. At the Bucknell Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, Weaver was the female recipient of the Alvin F. Jackson Jr. Memorial Scholar-Athlete award, presented to one male and one female senior athlete for outstanding academic and athletic achievement, and future promise as Bucknell alumni. She was also an active member of Bucknell's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and as a senior was the winner of her team's Robert A. Latour award, which recognizes a swimmer demonstrating "leadership, sportsmanship and dedicication."
