LEWISBURG, Pa. - In a team vote, junior attackman Andrew Sanders (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East H.S.) and junior goaltender Justin Sussman (Baltimore, Md./Friends Academy) have been named co-captains of the Bucknell men's lacrosse team for the 2003 season.
Sussman is the first goalie to captain the Bison lax squad since Ken Mangano in 1990. Sussman enjoyed his third straight terrific season for Bucknell in 2002, leading all Patriot League netminders with a .610 save percentage and an 8.85 goals-against average. He also ranks eighth nationally in save percentage and has stopped better than 60 percent of the shots fired on goal in each of his three seasons at Bucknell. Only five other goalies in team history have career save percentages over .600.
Sussman was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection last season after leading the Bison to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, and he is a first-team all-star candidate this spring.
Sanders was a mainstay on Bucknell's vaunted attack line all season, and he finished the 2002 campaign ranked third on the team and 12th in the Patriot League in scoring with 29 points (13 goals, 16 assists) in 13 games, all starts.
Sanders set career highs for assists (4) and points (6) in Bucknell's season-ending 20-10 victory over Lehigh last Saturday. He had at least one point in 11 of 13 games and at least one goal in 8 of 13 games. As a sophomore in 2001, Sanders was limited to only eight games due to a shoulder injury, but he still managed to record 13 goals and six assists.
Bucknell finished the season with a 6-7 overall record and a 5-1 Patriot League mark. The Bison are tied with Hobart for the league lead, although Army could make it a three-way tie with wins this week over Lafayette and Lehigh. In that scenario, the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament would be determined by the RPI rankings.
