LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's water polo team finished its weekend with a 1-2 record while hosting the second set of Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division League Games on Friday and Saturday, April 5-6. The Bison opened the weekend with a disappointing 9-8 loss to George Washington on Friday evening, before defeating Villanova, 8-5, and losing to 13th-ranked Princeton, 11-6, on Saturday.
Against Villanova, it was an evenly matched contest through the first three periods with Bucknell clinging to a 6-5 lead at the end of three. Bucknell struck first in the contest, scoring just 1:48 into it to go ahead 1-0. Villanova responded 2:13 later to even the score, 1-1. The Wildcats took a brief 2-1 lead with a goal with 2:13 left in the period, but freshman Cody Keffer tallied with :54 seconds left to tie it 2-2 going into the second.
The Orange and blue scored back-to-back goals in the second stanza to go up, 4-2, and the lead would never change hands again. Villanova did score once in the second frame to get within one, but the two teams both tallied twice in the third to keep the one-goal margin. In the fourth, the Bison defense went to work, shutting out the Wildcats, while Keffer and classmate Eileen Ketterer added insurance goals to create the 8-5 final.
Keffer, senior Brooke Rea and freshman Meg Blitzer all ended the game with two goals each. Junior Lindsay Chesterfield recorded 13 saves in net for Bucknell.
In the Princeton contest, the Bison came out strong against the nationally ranked team, scoring just :19 seconds into the game. The Tigers answered with a goal at the 4:25 mark to knot the score, and then took the lead, 2-1, with a goal with :29 seconds remaining in the first.
The Bucknell offense struggled in the second period, getting shut out 5-0 as Princeton extended its lead to 7-1 by halftime. BU came out of the intermission with a purpose, and promptly shut out the Tigers, 3-0, in the third to cut into the deficit and get within three, 7-4. A score by Keffer with 5:56 to go in the final quarter got the Bison within three, 8-5, but that was as close as they would get as Princeton outscored them 4-2 in the frame for the 11-6 victory.
Rea and sophomore Kelly Hofstetter were the team leaders with two goals each, while Chesterfield registered 14 saves.
