LEWISBURG, Pa. - Kendra Shanley's only goal of the night snapped an 8-8 tie with 1:45 remaining in regulation and lifted George Washington to a 9-8 victory over Bucknell in a Southern Division women's water polo match Friday night at Freas-Rooke Pool.
Bucknell (6-13, 1-3) kicked off a weekend of league games with its third close loss of the season to George Washington. The Colonials (13-4, 4-1) prevailed 6-3 and 9-7 earlier in the season.
Brooke Rea gave Bucknell a 6-5 lead with a goal with 1:42 remaining in a frenetic third quarter, but George Washington regained the lead with two goals in the final 1:02 of the period. Vanessa Fravel scored 1:24 into the fourth period to make it 8-6, the only time all night either team assumed a multi-goal lead.
The Bison made a late rush to tie the game in the final four minutes. Rea closed the gap to one goal with her second tally of the night with 3:37 to play. At the 2:08 mark, goalie Lindsay Chesterfield sent a pretty length-of-the-pool outlet pass to Meg Blitzer, who buried her third goal of the night to knot the game at 8-all.
Bucknell had two more possessions after falling behind 9-8, with the last chance coming after a steal and timeout with 10 seconds remaining. The Bison could not get a potential tying shot launched, however.
Adrienne Schober matched Blitzer's three goals to lead Bucknell. Fravel, Ashley Pyka and Juli Marhefka netted two goals apiece for the Colonials.
Chesterfield finished with 11 saves for Bucknell, while her counterpart Lisa Greenfield blocked 10 shots, including two from point-blank range in the second quarter.
Southern Division play continues on Saturday, with the Bison taking on Villanova at 3 p.m. and Princeton at 8 p.m. The latter match will be the final intercollegiate competition of any kind in Freas-Rooke Pool. Bucknell will play in a brand new aquatics facility in 2002-03.
