BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Senior Jenna Demetriades and sophomore Jenna Fitch were a combined 6-for-7 in game one of Bucknell's Patriot League doubleheader at Lehigh, but it was not enough as the Mountain Hawks out slugged the Bison in a 14-8 decision. Bucknell fared no better in the nightcap, dropping a 9-0 decision in the final game of the season.
The Orange and Blue pounded out 13 hits in game one of a doubleheader that was postponed from Sunday. With the score 5-2 in Lehigh's favor after two innings, Bucknell grabbed a brief 6-5 lead with a four-run fourth inning. Three consecutive singles in the inning loaded the bases for sophomore Erin Doyle, who patiently waited for ball four to get the scoring started. One out later, senior Barb Wood, who had scored Bucknell's first run of the game in the first with her first career homerun, singled to the pitcher and advanced to second on an error by the third baseman as two more runs came across. Demetriades followed with an RBI single to right field, chasing Lehigh pitcher Jenny Bender.
The lead was short lived, however, as the Mountain Hawks came back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to go back ahead 8-6. With five more runs in the bottom of the fifth and an insurance run in the sixth, the host team put the game out of reach.
With the loss, Bucknell's was eliminated from the Patriot League Tournament playoff race. As a result of the win, Lehigh clinched home field advantage, and will host the upcoming championship.
The game one loss seemed to take the wind out of Bucknell's sails, and after collecting 13 hits in the opener, the Orange and Blue could only manage two against pitcher Stephanie Howell in the nightcap.
Senior Lauren Titus and sophomore Angela Stackhouse were the only Bucknell batters to reach base by way of a hit. Senior Kelly Dugan was the only other Bison to reach, taking first on a fielding error by the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh's offense did not suffer as the team tallied three times in the first, twice in the second and four times in the fourth on its way to the 9-0 five-inning victory.
Bucknell ends the season at 12-32 overall and 5-15 in Patriot League play.
