Bison Women's Water Polo Wins Two in a Row to Advance to Fifth Place Game

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Bucknell women's water polo team got back on the winning side with two big victories on the second day of the Southern Division Championship, being held at Villanova on April 19-21. The Bison defeated Grove City 15-2 for second place in bracket B, and then went on to beat Gannon 10-7 for a spot in the fifth-place game. The top five teams in the Southern Division are awarded an automatic bid to the Eastern Championship.
Against Grove City, the Orange and Blue jumped out to a commanding 12-1 halftime lead behind four first half goals from freshman Meg Blitzer, and three from classmate Cody Keffer. The squad never looked back, extending its advantage to 15-2 in the third, and holding the Wolverines scoreless in the fourth for the victory.
Blitzer led the squad with four goals, while Keffer, sophomore Kate Webber and freshman Larissa Brown all added three points. Keffer scored three goals, Webber contributed one goal and two assists, and Brown handed out three assists.
Junior Lindsay Chesterfield made eight saves in net.
Later that night, the Bison faced Gannon for a chance to advance to the fifth place game. Bucknell made the most of it, coming away with a 10-7 victory over the Golden Knights. Four players scored multiple goals for BU, led by sophomore Kelly Hofstetter's four. Senior Brooke Rea dumped in two scores, along with freshmen Katie Hartigan and Cody Keffer.
Chesterfield tied her season high with 16 saves in the game.
Bucknell improves to 12-16 overall and will face Villanova at 1:25 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, in the fifth-place game.
