WEST POINT, N.Y. - Sophomore Abbie Valentine shot a one-over-par 71 - the lowest round by a Bucknell golfer this spring - to help Bucknell to a first-round total of 300 and a tie for fifth place after the opening 18 holes of the Patriot League Championship at the West Point Golf Club.
Scores were low on Saturday as rainy weather slowed the hilly course. Despite shooting a respectable 300, the Bison are 29 strokes off the lead, as host Army had three players shoot in the 60s en route to a nine-under 271. Navy is in second at 285, followed by Lehigh and American at 298, Bucknell and Colgate at 300, Lafayette at 321 and Holy Cross at 322.
The teams actually played 27 holes on Saturday, with 27 more to follow on Sunday. Only 18-hole results have been released, since the middle-round results are still unofficial.
Valentine's 71 was backed by a 73 from Scott Leeder, a 77 from Nick Leibowitz and a 79 from Dan Gale. Alex Dolle (82) and Charles Markey (85) competed but were not among Bucknell's low four players.
Army's Kevin Lee shot a league-record-tying 65 to take the individual lead by one stroke over teammate Ryan Hazelton, who shot a sizzling 30 on the front nine. Scott Manley also broke 70 with a 69 for the Black Knights. Billy Hurley led second-place Navy with a 67.
In the individual standings, Valentine rests in a four-way tie for fifth place alongside Army's Peter Mangold, Navy's Brian Crum and Colgate's Jesse Smith.
Tee times begin at 8 a.m. Sunday as the Patriot League Championship concludes at West Point.
