LEWISBURG, Pa. - Temple (12-18) scored seven unanswered runs and shut out Bucknell (14-26) over the last six innings in an 8-2 non-league victory of the Bison Wednesday afternoon at Bucknell Field.
The Owls snapped a six-game losing streak with the win, while the Bison lost for the sixth time in the last seven games.
Freshman Bryan Stamm (2-2) threw seven strong innings for Temple to pick up the win in his first career start. A native of nearby Mifflinburg, the left-hander scattered four hits and surrendered only two runs.
Kevin Burns started for Bucknell and allowed four hits and one run in three innings pitched. Tim Peacock (0-1) suffered the loss after yielding three runs on two hits and three walks over three innings.
After Temple took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Bucknell responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Chris Mahony stroked a one-out triple down the right field line, then scored when Ben Stoll reached on an error. Larry Scheetz drilled a triple to center to score Stoll.
Peacock entered the game in the top of the fourth but struggled with his control. The freshman left-hander walked a batter and hit a batter and allowed both runners to advance one base on a wild pitch. Both runners scored on a two-out single by the Owls' No. 9 hitter, Pete Colon, making it 3-2 as Temple took the lead for good.
Stamm fell into a groove after the third, and never allowed a Bison runner to advance beyond second. Mike Caron worked the final two innings for Temple and did not allow a run.
Zach Allen, R.J. Grant and Sean Magee hurled one inning apiece in a relief duty for Bucknell. Allen gave up three runs on four hits in the seventh, and Grant fired a three-up, three-down eighth. Magee gave up one unearned run on one hit.
With a pair of hits apiece, Fred Hilliard, Joe Lyall and John Quigley led a balanced offensive attack for the Owls, who out-hit Bucknell 11-6. Scheetz, Ben Krentzman and Mahony each notched two hits for the Bison.
Bucknell returns to Patriot League action on Saturday and Sunday with a pair of doubleheaders at Army. Saturday's games will be broadcast live on WMLP-1380 AM and over the Internet at www.BucknellBison.com, with the "The Voice of the Bison" Doug Birdsong calling the action.
