LEWISBURG, Pa. - Scott Solow scored three goals and Alex Kopicki handed out three assists to lead 16th-ranked Pennsylvania to a 7-5 victory over Bucknell Saturday at Christy-Mathewson Memorial Stadium. Penn remained unbeaten at 3-0 while sending the Bison to an 0-3 start for the first time since 1991.
Despite losing the game's first three faceoffs, the Quakers raced to a 3-0 lead after only 6:14 behind goals from Solow, Will Phillips and Mike Iannacone. Wes Fetchet got the Bison on the board at the 6:24 mark of the opening period when he stole the ball on a clearing attempt, walked in alone and scored with a shot at the feet of goalie Ryan Kelly.
Bucknell tied it with two quick goals from Dennis Geraghty to start the second quarter. Defenseman Kevin Smithies did most of the work on the tying tally, racing the length of the field before shuffling a pass to Geraghty on the doorstep for Bucknell's first shorthanded goal of the season.
Penn quickly answered as Kopicki set up Greg Voight and Solow for successive goals that gave the Quakers the lead for good. Rob Lane's unassisted marker brought the Bison within 5-4 at the half, but Peter Scott and Solow netted extra-man goals to restore Penn's three-goal lead.
The Penn defense, which limited Bucknell to only 18 shots in the game, kept the Bison off the scoreboard for a span of 26:05. Geraghty ended the drought with 2:35 to play to make it 7-5, but the Bison could not convert on three more possessions down the stretch.
Justin Sussman finished with 11 saves for Bucknell, while Kelly had nine for the Quakers. Penn outshot the Bison 29-18 and held a 42-39 edge in ground balls.
Bucknell next faces No. 7 Maryland Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
