GENEVA, N.Y. - Dennis Geraghty scored five goals, including three straight in the game's final 2:21, but 20th-ranked Bucknell's comeback fell just short in a 12-11 loss at Patriot League rival Hobart Saturday afternoon.
Bucknell (3-5, 2-1 Patriot League) had won 11 straight Patriot League games and three straight overall. Hobart improved to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in league play. The three Patriot League favorites - Bucknell, Hobart and Army - now all have one loss, with each team splitting against the other two.
Bucknell took a 7-5 lead on Andrew Copelan's unassisted goal with 7:55 left in the third quarter. That would be the Bison's last goal for a span of 18:06, during which time the Statesmen erupted for six straight goals.
John Bogosian scored two of his five goals during the run, including the go-ahead marker with 4:07 left in the third quarter. Hobart took its first two-goal lead of the day at the 9:55 mark of the fourth quarter. Bucknell goalie Justin Sussman made a terrific stop on Nate Hill's shot from the right side of the crease, but the ball deflected high in the air behind Sussman and just trickled into the goal. Tim Booth and Nate Molinari capped the run, giving Hobart an 11-7 lead with 5:46 to play.
Hobart still led by four at 12-8, when the Bison began a desperate run that nearly resulted in the equalizer. Geraghty converted a Kelly Hogue feed in traffic with 2:21 left to make it 12-9, and Patrick Christensen fed Geraghty for a pair of extra-man goals, the last coming with 22.9 seconds remaining, to make it 12-11.
Bucknell, which struggled in the faceoff game all day, appeared to have won the biggest draw of the game in the closing seconds, but Ned Hare could not control the ground ball and Greg McCarthy scooped it up and ran out the clock for the Statesmen.
While Booth scored a big goal for Hobart during the six-goal run, his most important contributions game in the faceoff area. He won 15 of 20 draws, and the Statesmen captured 19 of 26 on the day to control time of possession.
Freshman Chris Cara had a goal and four assists for Bucknell, while Andrew Sanders added a pair of tallies. Justin Sussman made 16 saves for Bucknell, while Mike Borsz stopped 11 for Hobart, including five in the final period.
The Bison return to action this Wednesday at sixth-ranked Georgetown.
