
Costello, Dennis Lead Bucknell Track Teams at Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. - Junior Greg Costello placed third out of 61 runners in the 10,000m run, and classmate Theresa Dennis finished ninth in a field of 30 in the same event, leading the Bucknell University men's and women's track & field teams on day one of the Adidas Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State at Paul H. Derr Track.
One of the premier track meets on the East Coast, the 2002 Raleigh Relays will draw more than 3,000 athletes representing approximately 110 teams.
No team scoring is kept at the meet.
Costello finished the 10K in 30:37.90, only 25 seconds behind event winner Matt Folk (unattached). Dennis cruised the 25-lap race in 36:42.85, just five seconds slower than her personal best.
Other distance runners who fared well included seniors Becki Marshall, Chris Crowe and Kristin Ferrell. Marshall raced to a 19th-place finish among some 111 athletes in the 5,000m run in 17:19.16, while Crowe came in 34th in the same event with a time of 17:46.54. Ferrell took eighth in the 10,000 and ran the eighth-best time in school history at 37:20.71.
In the men's 5,000m run, junior Lou Palma and senior Evan Honeyfield placed highly. Palma came in 37th out of 108 runners in 15:08.62, while Honeyfield took a close 40th in 15:09.88.
Senior Travis Etters and sophomore Wesley Reinhardt also competed in the 10,000 for Bucknell. Etters finished 43rd in 32:28.21, while Reinhardt placed 48th in 32:51.57.
Sophomores Noel Powell and Erin Lee led the way for the Bison in the field events. Powell placed 13th in a 38-competitor field in the long jump with a leap of 22'8", while Lee came in 14th among 22 finishers in the discus with a throw measured at 140'5".
Freshman Tolulope Fayanjuola also competed in the long jump, and soared to a 45th-place finish out of 68 competitors at 16'3 ?".
The Bison were also well-represented in the sprints and hurdles. In the men's 100m dash, Powell came in 40th (10.93) in a field of 146, while junior Matt Solomon took 63rd in 11.10. Senior David Gabriel was 124th at 11.48.
Junior Richard Alexander enjoyed a solid performance in the 400m hurdles, Alexander finished 42nd out of 90 competitors in a time of 55.57.
In the women's 100m dash, freshman Erin Turner-Byfield finished 100th (13.07) out of 113 runners, while junior Charity Brady came in 101st (13.15).
Junior Edwina Bourn turned in a 49th-place showing in a 71-competitor field in the 100m hurdles in 15.61, and freshman Kiley MacDonald was 53rd in the same event in 15.88.
Freshman Monique Boley was Bucknell's lone representative in the 400m dash. Boley posted the 73rd-best time (59.83) out of the 127 quarter-milers.
Bourn and MacDonald also competed in the 400m hurdles. The event consisted of 78 athletes, and Bourn came in 22nd in 1:04.60, while MacDonald was 38th in 1:06.27.
Bucknell also had one relay team compete on the day, and the women's 1,600m sprint medley team finished 10th out of 27 schools in 4:05.33.
Several Bucknell athletes will compete in day two of the Raleigh Relays tomorrow, while the remainder of the team will participate in the Susquehanna Invitational.
