EMMITSBURG, Md. - Junior goalie Justin Sussman made 16 saves and freshmen John Salvesen and Chris Cara scored key fourth-quarter goals to lift Bucknell to a hard-fought 5-3 victory over Mount St. Mary's Wednesday at muddy Alumni Field.
It its first road game of the season, Bucknell (2-4) sprinted to a 3-0 lead after one quarter, but the Bison did not score again until the opening minute of the fourth quarter. The Mountaineers (1-6) tied it with three second-quarter goals, and the two teams slugged it out in the mud for nearly 16 scoreless minutes before Salvesen finally put the Bison ahead for good 24 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Andrew Sanders and Kelly Hogue scored 1:48 apart midway through the opening period to give the Bison a 2-0 lead, and after a forced turnover, Dennis Geraghty found Cara open for a breakaway goal with eight seconds remaining in the stanza to make it 3-0.
Seemingly in control, Bucknell let the three-goal cushion slip away in the second period. Josh Warfield scored at the 9:30 mark to finally put Mount St. Mary's on the board. Mark Cox and Billy Jautze followed with goals in the final 1:50 of the half to knot the game at 3-3 at intermission.
Mount St. Mary's controlled play during the scoreless third period, outshooting Bucknell 9-3. But Sussman was at his best, making seven saves in the quarter.
On the opening faceoff of the fourth quarter, Cox was penalized for a push in the back, and Bucknell's extra-man unit capitalized. Salvesen took a feed from Andrew Copelan on the left wing and ripped a high shot past Tom Dryer for his second goal of the season. Four minutes later Cara came from behind the goal to score his second of the game and give the Bison a much-needed insurance marker.
Sussman, the reigning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, now has 35 saves and only eight goals against in his last two outings, both Bucknell wins.
The three goals allowed against Mount St. Mary's were the Bison's fewest since a 15-1 win over Holy Cross last March 3. The eight combined goals matched Bucknell's lowest scoring game since a 4-0 win at Franklin & Marshall on May 15, 1968, the final game of the program's first year. The 5-3 win over Mount St. Mary's is the second-lowest scoring game in school history, tied with three other eight-goal games, the most recent coming in a 5-3 loss at Wilkes on May 16, 1973.
While the Mountaineers gained a 34-28 shot advantage, the Bison dominated the possession stats. Bucknell held a 41-28 ground ball edge and won 10 of 12 faceoffs. Freshman Ryan Goodman won the last 10 draws of the game after losing his first attempt. Bucknell was successful on its first 16 clear attempts of the day, with its only failed attempt coming in the game's final two minutes.
Dryer finished with 16 saves for Mount St. Mary's.
Bucknell returns to Patriot League play this Saturday at Holy Cross at 1 p.m.
