LEWISBURG, Pa. - Suzanne Raffaele scored four goals and handed out four assists as well to lead the Bison to 15-0 victory over St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday, when the season opener for the women's lacrosse game was contested in Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. This was season-opener for Bucknell, and the first collegiate women's lacrosse game ever for St. Francis (Pa.).
The Bucknell women's lacrosse team posted its first shut out ever for the program in its 26 years as a women's varsity sport.
Bucknell got four goals from sophomore Laura Nuss and one goal and three assists from senior captain Melissa Montefusco. Nicole Kallis registered eight saves en route to a shutout.
Laura Sieboth got the Bison on the board first just 2:00 into the contest with an unassisted goal. Bucknell then went on to score four goals in the next 8:00 of play with two goals coming from Raffalele and one goal each from Montefusco and Mia Donahue. St. Francis then looked like it was going to get on the board with around 18:00 left in the first half, but their opportunity was taken away when Kallis made a stick saving grab to stop the Red Flash. The Bison then went on to score seven goals making it 12-0 before the half. Raffaele and Nuss combined for four goals and two assists during the scoring spree.
In the second half of play reserve players saw action with freshmen Ellen Kurkowski and sophomore Allison Berry each posting goals for the Bison. Nuss topped her four goal scoring day when she received a pass from teammate Amy Lee and sent a shot soaring into the back of the net with around 5:00 left of play for the last goal of the game.
Bucknell won 11 of 18 faceoffs, with most of them being accounted for in the first half.
Bucknell had 21 shots on goal, 13 of which were in the first half while St. Francis only had eight shots on goal.
Bucknell faces Mount St. Mary's next Wednesday, at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium at 4 p.m.
