ORLANDO--On their last day at the Rebel Softball Classic Friday night, the Bison softball team split a doubleheader under the lights, knocking off Wagner College 2-1 and falling 8-4 to Butler University. Freshman hurler Kelli Haskins notched her first collegiate victory in the opener allowing only four hits. In game two, the Bison could never recover from Butler's five-run third inning, falling 8-4.
In game one, Haskins would already have a 2-0 lead before she stepped in the circle in the bottom of the first. Walks to leadoff hitter Meredith Gill and Kelly Dugan sandwiched around an out put Bison runners on first and second with one down. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, then with two outs Kathy Zeevalk reached on a throwing error by shortstop Lynn Shortway, scoring Gill. Jenna Demetriades then delivered a single to score Dugan.
Haskins took the lead into the bottom of the first and dominated the Wagner hitters for five innings. Two singles and a walk would be the only offense Wagner could muster until pushing across a run in the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, leadoff hitter Jen James reached on a throwing error by Haskins. Back-to-back singles drove home James and put runners on first and second with no outs. After a force out at third and a flyout to left, Haskins induced a ground ball force out at second to leave two runners on base and get out of the jam. Haskins induced three straight groundouts in the bottom of the seventh to earn the complete game victory.
Wagner pitcher Krystle Petty settled in after the first, surrendering only four Bison base hits the rest of the way. Dugan finished the game 1-for-2 with two walks in four plate appearances. Kristen Potts also reached base twice, singling and drawing a walk in three plate appearances.
Bucknell would get on the board first in game two as well. Gill led off the bottom of the first with a single, then Barb Wood bunted her over to second. Following an out, Angela Stackhouse singled up the middle to drive in Gill.
Butler threatened in the next half inning, but with the bases loaded baserunner Jess Stephens was called out at second for leaving before the pitch was delivered for out number three. In the Butler third, starter Brandi Porter would struggle with her control. Two walks, a double, and a single to center would plate three Bulldog runs with only one out. After a flyout to center, Butler would load the bases before Porter was pulled in favor of junior Lauren Box. Box struck out the first batter she faced for out number three, but Butler had plated five runs to take a commanding 5-1 lead.
Bucknell climbed back into the game in their half of the fifth. Potts led off and reached first on an error by the shortstop. After an out, Wood singled to put runners on first and third. A wild pitch scored Potts and pushed Wood over to second. Dugan followed with a double to plate Wood, then a two-out single by Erin Doyle scored Dugan.
Box, who had retired the first ten batters she faced, ran into trouble in the seventh. WIth Bucknell trailing 5-4, Butler's Andrea Keech led off the seventh and reached on an error. Jamie Bradley's single put runners on first and second before the Bison forced out Keech at third for the first out. A throwing error on the next play plated Bradley. After an RBI single, Jess Stephens scored on a squeeze play for Butler's third run of the inning. Bucknell recorded a force out at third for the second out, and the next batter grounded out to Box.
Trailing 8-4, the Bison went down in order in the seventh. Relief pitcher Melissa Benter, who came on in the fifth, struck out six batters in 2 1/3 innings, including the last two Bison to end the game. Stackhouse led Bucknell at the plate with two hits in four at-bats and an RBI. Heather Ryan went 2-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored for the Bulldogs.
The Bison stand 3-7 on the season after the 10-game spring break trip. They will be in action again Wednesday, March 20th, hosting Delaware for a doubleheader starting at 2:00 pm.
