BRADENTON, Fla. -- Bucknell wrapped up its Spring Break Trip with a 7-0 setback to Dartmouth College this afternoon at Academy Park.
The Bison fell to 5-12 for the season, and finished the week 1-6. Dartmouth won its first game of the season and bumped its record to 1-2.
Pat Dowling (1-0) and Bryn Alderson combined to throw a five-hit shutout for Dartmouth. Dowling threw the first eight innings and held Bucknell to five singles. He walked two and struck out three. Alderson retired the side in order in the ninth.
Junior R.J. Grant (0-3) started on the mound and took the loss for the Bison. In his shortest outing of the season, Grant gave up six runs (four earned) in three and two-third innings pitched on six hits, three walks and one hit batsman.
Dartmouth scored three runs in the bottom of the third and fourth to forge an early 6-0 lead. The Big Green took advantage of two walks, one hit and one error in the third. Grant allowed three hits and one walk in the fourth, and was relieved by freshman Jay Weiner. Making his collegiate debut, Weiner ended the inning on a pop-up.
Weiner also pitched the fifth and sixth innings, and surrendered one run on two hits and a walk. Freshman Tim Peacock held Dartmouth scoreless in the seventh, and freshman Eric Steinbach blanked the Big Green in the eighth.
Senior Eric Fishman led the Bison at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Fishman has now hit safely in 12 straight games, dating back to Bucknell's 4-1 loss at Georgia Southern on Feb. 24. Fishman is batting a team-leading .328.
Sophomore Chris Cipolloni, freshman Austin Barrett and sophomore Chris Mahony also had one hit apiece for the Bison.
Bucknell returns to action on March 19 at Mount St. Mary's in a non-league showdown beginning at 3 p.m.
