BRADENTON, Fla. - Freshman Austin Barrett drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th with a sacrifice fly, and Bucknell snapped a four-game losing skid with a 6-5 win over Dartmouth this afternoon at Academy Park.
Bucknell (5-10) won for the first time in five games during its Spring Break Trip, and spoiled Dartmouth's season-opener.
With no outs, Barrett drove a fastball into centerfield, and sophomore Chris Cipolloni sprinted home from third to easily beat the throw. Cipolloni led off the inning with a walk, and advanced to third on a pinch-hit single by sophomore Sam Moss, who was squaring for a sacrifice bunt before slapping a high fastball over a charging Dartmouth second baseman.
Senior Gregg Farmery threw three and one-third innings of scoreless relief to improve to 3-0 for the season. He also extended his scoreless innings streak this season to 13 after seven appearances this year. Farmery recorded one strikeout and gave up three hits and one walk.
Freshman reliever Nicholas Peay (0-1) took the loss for Dartmouth.
Seniors Larry Scheetz and Eric Fishman scored in the top of the first to put Bucknell on top 2-0. Scheetz reached on an infield single, and moved over to third on a double to right by Fishman. Junior B.J. Batterson drove in Scheetz with a groundout, moving Fishman to third. Fishman and junior Ben Krentzman executed a double steal to push across the Bison's second run.
Bucknell added two more runs in the fourth on RBI from freshman Matt Belmont and sophomore Ben Stoll. Krentzman reached on an error to lead off the inning before freshman Brian Day singled to put runners on first and second with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt from freshman Phil Bunting, Belmont notched his first career RBI with a fly ball into right field, scoring Krentzman. Stoll singled to left-center to bring home Day, and the Bison went ahead 4-0.
Bison starting pitcher Zach Allen was impressive in the early going. The right-hander retired 12 of the first 14 batters he faced and struck out four over the first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth. Allen walked Dartmouth's No. 7 and 8 hitters in the fifth, and both runners scored as the Big Green cut the lead to 4-2.
Allen shut out Dartmouth in the sixth, and sophomore Cory Nadler was called on to start the seventh. Dartmouth scored three runs off Nadler in two-thirds of an inning with three hits and a walk. With two outs and a runner on third, Farmery was summoned out of the pen and quieted the rally by getting the Big Green's No. 5 hitter to line to right.
The Bison tied the game at 5-5 in the eighth when Barrett ripped a pinch-hit single up the middle to score Cipolloni from third. Batterson led off with a single, and Krentzman replaced Batterson at first on a fielder's choice. Cipolloni pinch ran for Krentzman, and Day reached on an error before Barrett's game-tying single.
Bucknell had the winning on third in ninth, when Scheetz walked and advanced to third on a single by Fishman. But Scheetz was tagged out running back to third on a failed suicide squeeze play, and sophomore Steve Stutzman struck out to end the inning.
In six innings of work Allen struck out four, and gave up four hits and two runs. Dartmouth starter John Velosky went eighth innings and surrendered eight hits and five runs (three earned) with five strikeouts and one walk.
Bucknell will play for the sixth straight day tomorrow when it faces Illinois in a 4 p.m. match-up. The game will be played at Ed Smith Stadium, the Cincinnati Reds' spring training facility.
