ORLANDO--Bucknell opened its 2002 softball season this week at the Rebel Softball Classic in Orlando, Florida. In the season opener this morning at the Osceola County Sports Complex, the Bison shut out Austin Peay 1-0 behind a strong pitcing performance by junior Lauren Box. On the back end of the doubleheader, Bucknell battled the University of Toledo in another pitchers' duel, falling 2-1 in the end.
In game one, Austin Peay, playing in its twentieth game of the season, threatend to score early, advancing runners to third base in both the first and third innings. A pop out to second baseman Kristen Potts and a groundout to shortstop Meredeith Gill enabled the Bison defense to end the threats.
Bucknell would get on the board in the top of the fourth, plating what would be the game's only run. After a single by senior Kathy Zeevalk, senior co-captain Kelly Dugan bunted pinch runner Courtney Dohoney over to second. After an out, senior leftfielder Lauren Titus doubled to drive home Dohoney.
Austin Peay would again strand runners on second and third in their half of the sixth, before threatening to tie up the game once more in the seventh. A bunt single, sacrifice bunt, and deep flyout to right put a runner on third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. However, a weak groundout to Potts would preserve the shutout and give the Bison their first victory of the season.
Box surrendered only four hits and struck out three. Freshman Lydia Money took the loss for the Lady Govs, allowing one run on six hits and striking out seven. Senior Barb Wood was 2-for-2 with a double for the Bison. Dugan also doubled, going 1-for-2 in the game.
In the second game, Toledo freshman Kim Pettitt and a tough Rocket defense stymied the Bison offense all day. The Bison collected only four hits and plated its only run on sophomore Angela Stackhouse's game-tying solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. However, Jessica Horn answered Stackhouse's blast with one of her own to straight-away centerfield in the sixth. Pettitt would retire the next six Bison batters in order to earn the complete game victory.
Junior Brandi Porter took the loss, allowing only five hits in seven innings. For the Bison offense, sophomore Erin Doyle collected two singles in two at-bats.
Bucknell will play another doubleheader on Monday, taking on Liberty at 10:00 am and Tennessee Martin at 2:00 pm. Altogether, the Bison are scheduled to play ten games on the spring break trip.
