Bucknell Baseball Drops a Pair to Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Bucknell University baseball team was swept by Georgia Southern this afternoon in a non-league doubleheader at J.I. Clements Stadium.
The Bison lost by a count of 13-4 in the opener and 10-0 in the nightcap.
Georgia Southern (3-5) jumped out to a 6-0 lead against Bucknell (0-5) in game one. However, the Bison rallied to cut the deficit to 6-4 with a four-run third inning. Freshman Phil Bunting started the inning by drawing a walk before scoring on a one-out bloop single down the leftfield line by senior Eric Fishman. A balk scored sophomore Ben Stoll before junior B.J. Batterson capped the rally with a two-run double to deep left-centerfield.
The Eagles scored a combined seven runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings and shut out Bucknell the rest of the way. Bucknell starter Zach Allen threw five innings and dropped to 0-2 on the season. He allowed six earned runs while striking out four.
Fishman went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI in the opener.
Sophomore Brian Rogers struck out a career-high 13 in eight innings and gave up just five hits to lead Georgia Southern in the nightcap. The Eagles led 3-0 after four innings before breaking the game open with a four-run fifth to ahead 7-0. Georgia Southern put three more runs on the board in the sixth inning, and pounded out 15 hits for the game.
Bucknell starter Kevin Burns gave up six earned runs in four innings of work and fell to 0-2. Senior Sean Magee pitched three innings and allowed four earned runs, and freshman Eric Steinbach threw a scoreless eighth inning in his collegiate debut.
Sophomore Sam Moss, senior Larry Scheetz, sophomore Pete Wolf, Batterson and sophomore Chris Cipolloni all singled for Bucknell in the second game.
The Bison will conclude the three-game series at noon tomorrow.
