LEWISBURG, Pa. - Six Bucknell athletes were named to the All-Patriot League swimming & diving team this afternoon in honor of their performances at the Patriot League Championships on Feb. 14-16 at the U.S. Naval Academy.
All-league status is awarded to a total of 36 student-athletes: 18 men and 18 women. The winner of each individual event at the championship earns an automatic berth on the team, which is then completed with the next highest point scorers.
Sophomores Daniela Faas and Meghan Freese were automatic selections after picking up individual victories. Faas placed first in the 1,650 free in a school record time of 17:13.27, while Freese touched the wall first in the 50 free in 24.10. Faas and Freese helped the Bison finish in second place and just 31 points behind Navy for the league championship title.
Junior Darby Golino and sophomore Jennifer Cancro also garnered all-league status by earning 48 points apiece. Golino placed second in both backstroke events while taking fifth in the 200 IM. She was named to the all-league team for the third year in a row. Cancro finished second behind Faas in the 1,650 and came in third in both the 200 and 500 free.
For the men's team, junior Stephen Schwanhausser sophomore Jack Sheehan were named to the all-league team for the first time in their careers. Schwanhausser accumulated 45 points, and placed third in the 200 IM, fourth in the 200 breast and fifth in the 100 breast. He also set school records in both the 200 breast (2:03.30) and the 100 breast (57.34). Sheehan also made the team with 45 points, and placed in three different events, including the 400 IM (second), 200 IM (fourth) and 200 back (sixth). His silver-medal winning time of 4:05.17 in the 400 IM was a new school record.
Schwanhausser and Sheehan paced the Bison men's team to a fourth-place finish.
Bucknell returns to action on Feb. 28-March 2 at the ECAC Championships at the University of Pittsburgh.
