Bucknell Women's Swimming Places Second at the Patriot League Championships

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Bucknell University women's swimming & diving team earned one gold and three silver medals on the final day of the Patriot League Championships and finished the three-day event in second place with 632 points. The Bison men's team picked up one silver and one bronze medal this evening, and came in fourth with 474 points.
Bucknell's women's squad finished just 31 points behind Navy, which won the team title with 663 points. Bison head coach Jerry Foley was named as the league's Female Coach of the Year. Foley's women's team was picked to finish fourth in the pre-season Patriot League poll.
American finished third (582) and was followed by Lehigh (506), Colgate (372), Army (327), Lafayette (225) and Holy Cross (198).
Lehigh won the men's championship with 694 points. American came in second with a 643-point total. Army (575), Bucknell (474), Colgate (396), Lafayette (356) and Holy Cross (254) rounded out the team scoring.
Sophomore Daniela Faas led the women's team by winning the gold in the 1,650 free in a brilliant 17:13.27. Her time bettered the former Bucknell record by over 12 seconds.
Winning silver medals were junior Darby Golino in the 200 back (2:03.57), sophomore Meghan Freese in the 100 free (52.47) and freshman Jamie Flick in the 200 breast (2:23.09). Golino and Freese each recorded the second-fastest time in school history in their events, while Flick reset her own school record.
Freshman Jackie Feinthel and senior Barbara Morgan turned in three fifth-place performances. Feinthel came in fifth in the 1,650 free (17:16.03, second in school history) and the 200 fly (2:08.73). Morgan took fifth in the 200 breast in 2:26.30.
Placing sixth was senior Abby Weaver in the 100 free (53.39) while freshman Ashley Aiken was eighth in the 200 fly (2:12.39).
Six other members of the women's team earned points on the evening. Junior Rebecca Dolan came in 11th in both the 1,650 free (18:00.10) and the 200 fly (2:11.27), freshman Tricia Rado placed 11th in the 200 back (2:10.21), sophomore Jill Nonemaker came in 11th in the 200 breast (2:29.01), sophomore Andrea Kern was 12th in the 1,650 free (18:07.50), freshman Lauren Kmec placed 16th in the 200 breast (2:33.09) and freshman Robin Gibson finished 16th in the 100 free (55.50).
The Bison women's 400 free relay team of sophomore Jennifer Cancro, Gibson, Weaver and Freese took fourth in 3:34.58.
Freshman Adam Freeman turned in the highest finish of the evening for the men's team. Freeman finished second in the 1 meter diving with a score of 277.20. Junior Kurt McCoy also won a medal by coming in third in the 1,650 free in 16:26.31.
Junior Stephen Schwanhausser capped off an impressive championship by taking fourth in the 200 breast in 2:03.30, a new school record. Schwanhausser also broke the BU record in the 100 breast yesterday.
Freshman Andrew Steiner finished fifth in the 1,650 with a time of 16:37.81, while sophomore Jack Sheehan and junior Geoffrey Konopka each came in sixth. Sheehan was sixth in the 200 back (1:55.04), and Konopka placed sixth in the 200 breast (2:07.43). Junior Gonzalo Diaz was seventh in the 1,650 in 16:45.79 and 10th in the 200 fly in 1:58.19.
Other Bison who contributed to the team score were junior Stelios Saffos in the 200 breast (10th, 2:09.58), sophomore Michael Harrigan in the 200 fly (12th, 1:59.05), junior Adam Yerkes in the 200 back (13th, 2:00.12), sophomore Matt Hallowell in the 200 back (14th, 2:00.78), sophomore Michael Willats in thee 100 free (15th, 48.25) and freshman John Hoffman in the 200 fly (1:59.96).
Bucknell's 400 free relay team of sophomore Peter Garvin, Willats, freshman Jake Thieman and Sheehan finished sixth in 3:11.38.
Both teams will continue their season on Feb. 28-March 2 at the ECAC Championships at the University of Pittsburgh.
