BU Women's Swimming Jumps to Early Lead at Patriot League Championships

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Bucknell University women's swimming and diving team has forged an 11-point lead after day one of the Patriot League Championships at Navy. The Bison men's team is currently in fourth place.
The championships will resume tomorrow and continue through Saturday.
The Bison women have accumulated 184 points on the strength of one first-place, two second-place and one third-place performance. Navy checks in at second with 173 points, followed by American (153), Lehigh (133), Army (95), Colgate (79), Lafayette (67) and Holy Cross (53).
Bucknell's men's team earned 154 points on the day, and trails Army (166), Lehigh (204) and American (220). The Bison lead Lafayette (111), Colgate (57) and Holy Cross (47).
Sophomore Meghan Freese grabbed the first gold medal for Bucknell after winning the 50 free in 24.10, the second-best time in school history. Sophomore Daniela Faas took home the silver in the 500 free in 5:01.15, which also ranks second in BU history, and sophomore Jennifer Cancro earned the bronze in the same event with a 5:01.52 clocking. Cancro broke the Bucknell record in the 500 free during prelims earlier in the day with a time of 5:00.59.
Placing fourth for the women's team was senior Abby Weaver in the 50 free (24.72). Junior Darby Golino raced to a fifth-place finish in the 200 IM in 2:09.46 after setting the new school record with a 2:09.05 clocking in prelims.
Freshmen Jackie Feinthel and Ashley Aiken each earned an eighth-place finish for Bucknell. Feinthel recorded a 5:08.67 in the 500 free, and Aiken posted a 2:10.58 in the 200 IM.
Also picking up points for the Bison were freshman Robin Gibson in the 500 free (11th, 5:10.62), freshman Jamie Flick in the 200 IM (13th, 2:11.32) and sophomore Krisztina Poda in the 500 free (15th, 5:12.96).
Bucknell also garnered one silver and one bronze in the relay events. The 400 medley relay team of Golino, Flick, Aiken and Weaver placed second with a new school record time of 3:54.53, while the 200 free relay team of Weaver, Gibson, Aiken and Freese took third in 1:37.00, second fastest all-time at Bucknell.
For the men's team, junior Stephen Schwanhausser posted the Bison's highest finish after winning the bronze in the 200 IM in 1:55.11, the fifth-best time ever at Bucknell.
The Bison men had three individuals place fourth on the evening. Sophomore Jack Sheehan finished just three hundredths of a second behind Schwanhausser in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.14, sixth on the BU all-time list.
Sophomore Peter Garvin took fourth in the 50 free in 21.13, tying his personal record that is the seventh-best time in school history, and freshman Adam Freeman was fourth in the 3 meter diving. Freeman recorded a score of 364.15, the sixth-best mark ever at BU.
Other Bison who competed in final competition and contributed to the team's point total were junior Adam Yerkes in the 500 free (eighth, 4:44.00), freshman Steven Evans in the 3 meter diving (eighth, 286.05), sophomore Matt Hallowell in the 200 IM (12th, 1:57.97), junior Geoffrey Konopka in the 200 IM (13th, 158.11), freshman John Hoffman in the 200 IM (15th, 1:59.22), sophomore Michael Harrigan in the 500 free (16th, 4:52.13) and junior Michael Guskey in the 50 free (16th, 22.25).
In the 200 free relay, sophomore Michael Willats, Garvin, Guskey and sophomore Adam Puff teamed up to place fourth in 1:25.00. Bucknell's 400 medley relay squad of Sheehan, junior Stelios Saffos, Willats and Garvin took fifth in 3:28.25.
