LEWISBURG, Pa. - Joe McCourt rushed for 94 yards and a touchdown and Lafayette's defense kept Bucknell out of the end zone in a 19-3 victory over the Bison on Homecoming Day at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
Bucknell suffered its fifth straight loss and fell to 2-7 overall and 0-5 in the Patriot League, while the Leopards climbed even at 5-5 and 3-2 in the league.
Marko Glavic completed 18 of 30 passes for 168 yards and a 3-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Jackson that gave Lafayette a 19-3 lead at the half. A pair of short Martin Brecht field goals made it 6-0, the latter coming after a Bucknell fumble at its own 10 on its second offensive play.
Chris Lundberg's 20-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter proved to be Bucknell's only points of the day. Periodically using wideout Daris Wilson at quarterback helped Bucknell move the ball effectively at times, but in the third quarter Lundberg missed a 29-yard field goal after a 17-play drive, and on its next possession Herb Kennedy picked off a Cole Ciesnolevicz pass at the Lafayette 5.
Wilson was Bucknell's leading rusher with 49 yards on nine carries. Freshman tailback Antwan Kennedy rushed for 42 yards on seven carries. Ciesnolevicz started his third straight game at quarterback and was 9 of 18 for 91 yards and an interception.
Lafayette's defense kept Bucknell out of the end zone for the first time since a 10-9 loss to Holy Cross in 2000. The three points were Bucknell's fewest since a 47-0 loss to William & Mary in 1996 and its fewest in a Patriot League game since a 21-0 loss to Fordham in 1992.
McCourt, whose 9-yard TD run stretched Lafayette's lead from 6-3 to 12-3 five minutes into the second quarter, became the ninth Leopards back to rush for 1,000 yards in a season.
Bucknell outgained Lafayette 282-280 but was hampered by three turnovers and six penalties.
The Bison travel to Lehigh next Saturday, while the Lafayette hosts Holy Cross.
